About the role
Spectrum Geosurvey specialises in coastal geophysical surveys, supporting a wide range of clients in the offshore renewables sector. We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Hydrographic Data Processor to join our growing team based in our Lymington office. This multidisciplinary role will vary with workload and client requirements, offering a great opportunity to build key industry-related skills and gain exposure to a variety of projects in the offshore renewable energy sector.
Successful candidates will receive industry-leading in-house training on hydrographic data processing techniques and established workflows using CARIS HIPS & SIPS. You will be supported by an experienced and committed team of surveyors while developing your skill set within our growing company.
Responsibilities
- Conduct bathymetric processing and assist in maintaining quality and consistency of data processing and deliverable creation.
- Assist Processing and Project managers with reporting, charting, and data management.
- Conduct short training sessions to help develop more junior staff.
- Assist with data archive and data repository management, ensuring safe storage of a large variety of data formats.
- Assist with notifying software manufacturers of any bugs and help implement solutions.
- Create charts and chartlets in QGIS or ArcGIS for relevant project documentation.
- Perform data quality control and assurance to ensure compliance with the project scope.
- Follow and contribute to established data processing procedures and guidelines.
- Identify, investigate, and troubleshoot inconsistencies in data to ensure compliance with the project scope of work.
- Prepare reports based on geophysical survey data and interpretation.
- Identify and catalog objects on the seabed and produce target listings.
- Create multibeam backscatter products, substrate, and morphology characterisation.
- Provide a positive feedback loop to the in-field survey team to improve data acquisition quality and practices.
- Manage projects of low to intermediate complexity, including project administration, client liaison, and resource allocation (IT, processing software).
- Understand and work to company QHSE standards.
Requirements
- Degree or equivalent in a relevant subject such as Hydrography or other related marine or earth science.
- At least 2 years’ experience collecting/processing hydrographic data.
- Competent in hydrographic data processing without assistance, with a thorough understanding of hydrographic surveying principles and experience/knowledge of bathymetric suites, including PDS, QINSy, and CARIS HIPS & SIPS.
- Proven analytical and problem-solving ability to troubleshoot complex issues.
- Experience in training and mentoring.
- Good written and oral communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information in a training environment.
- High level of IT literacy and proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word and Excel.
- Methodical approach to handling large numbers of data files and manipulating large bathymetric datasets.
- Experience creating charts in QGIS and compiling concise and accurate survey reports.
- Knowledge of hydrographic survey planning and reporting.
- Independent thinker with the ability to recognise development opportunities and take responsibility for their implementation.
Desired Qualifications
- Work experience with GIS and spatial data.
- Prior industry experience in a hydrographic surveying role or related industry.
- Project management experience.
- Experience using hydrographic software such as QINSy, Teledyne PDS, or Caris HIPS & SIPS (for graduate positions, no experience is required for bespoke hydrographic suites, but experience with GIS, spatial data, or handling big data is advantageous).
- Experience with a scripting language (Python).
- Full valid UK driving license.
