Graduate Hydrographic Data Processor

About the role

Spectrum Geosurvey specialises in coastal geophysical surveys, supporting a wide range of clients in the offshore renewables sector. We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Graduate Geospatial/Hydrographic Data Processor to join our growing team based in our Lymington office. This is a great opportunity to build key industry-related skills and gain exposure to a variety of projects in the offshore renewable energy sector.

No hydrographic experience is required for this graduate position, though experience working with GIS and spatial data, or handling big data would be an advantage. Successful candidates will receive industry-leading in-house training on hydrographic data processing techniques and established workflows using CARIS HIPS & SIPS.

Responsibilities

• Under guidance, conduct bathymetric processing and assist in maintaining quality and consistency of data processing and deliverable creation.
• Assist processing and reporting managers with reporting, charting, and data management.
• Assist with data archive and data repository management, ensuring safe storage of a large variety of data formats.
• Assist with notifying software manufacturers of any bugs and help implement solutions.
• Become familiar with best practices for handling, maintaining, and storing survey equipment as per manufacturer’s instructions or company guidance.
• Create charts and chartlets in QGIS or ArcGIS for relevant project documentation.
• Perform data quality control and assurance to ensure compliance with the project scope of work.
• Follow and contribute to established data processing procedures and guidelines.
• Identify, investigate, and troubleshoot inconsistencies in data to ensure compliance with the project scope of work.
• Prepare reports based on geophysical survey data and interpretation.
• Conduct seabed contact identification and characterisation.
• Provide a positive feedback loop to the in-field survey team to improve data acquisition quality and practices.
• Understand and work to company QHSE standards.

Requirements

• Degree or equivalent in a relevant subject such as Hydrography, Marine Geography, Marine Sciences, or a related field.
• Working knowledge of hydrographic multibeam systems, motion reference units, side scan sonar, and magnetometer systems.
• Highly competent in the use of all Microsoft Office applications including Word and Excel.
• Excellent data management and coordination skills to handle large volumes of data.
• Strong technical report writing abilities.
• Good interpersonal and written communication skills.
• High attention to detail while working under pressure.
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, with a can-do attitude and strong verbal communication skills.
• Ability to take initiative, problem-solve, and troubleshoot data where required.

Desired Qualifications

• Work experience with GIS and spatial data.
• Prior industry experience in a hydrographic surveying role or related industry.
• Project management experience.
• Experience using hydrographic software, such as QINSy, Teledyne PDS, or Caris HIPS & SIPS.
• Knowledge of hydrographic survey planning and reporting.
• Experience with creating charts (QGIS & ArcGIS).
• Experience with a scripting language (Python).
• Full valid UK driving licence.
