Hydro Data Collection Specialist I or II

About the role

The Hydro Data Collection Specialist performs hydrologic, meteorologic, and water use data collection, processing, and quality assurance. Multiple levels (I and II) exist within this classification, with responsibilities varying by complexity and task assignment.

Responsibilities

Hydro Data Collection Specialist I

• Measure and record hydrometeorological data, including water levels, rainfall, net and total radiation, wind speed, wind direction, relative humidity, evaporation, and agricultural water use.
• Assist in installation, calibration, testing, validation, and maintenance of hydrometeorological instrumentation.
• Contact agricultural water use permittees to collect permissions for water use monitoring through power use estimation or other methods; obtain permittee authorizations.
• Measure and record pump run times at agricultural irrigation systems.
• Maintain field notes and data collection documentation in paper and electronic form.
• Use portable and desktop computers in the field and office for data collection activities.
• Assist in conducting vertical elevation surveys at monitoring locations.
• Train for advancement to the next level in the Hydrologic Data Collection Specialist series.
• Serve as part of the Incident Command Team (mission-critical role).
• Perform other duties as needed.

Hydro Data Collection Specialist II

• Install, calibrate, test, validate, and maintain hydrometeorologic instrumentation.
• Design, construct, and install monitoring sites.
• Assist in troubleshooting and repairing hydrometeorologic instrumentation.
• Use acoustic velocity meters to measure discharge at hydrologic monitoring sites.
• Meet with landowners and staff to coordinate hydrometeorologic data collection and obtain signed Permissive Use Agreements.
• Use ultrasonic flow meters at agricultural water use monitoring locations to collect flows.
• Interact with District databases storing hydrometeorologic data and supporting documentation.

Requirements

Hydro Data Collection Specialist I

• High School diploma or GED.
• Experience in agriculture or electrical, plumbing, and/or carpentry trades.
• Experience operating tools and machinery (e.g., post-hole digger, weed-eater, drill, chainsaw) safely and efficiently.
• Experience operating and backing a truck and trailer to specific locations.
• Valid driver’s license.

Hydro Data Collection Specialist II

• All Level I requirements.
• Minimum of two (2) years of experience in hydrometeorologic or water-related data collection.
