HVAC Technician II

About the role

This position is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC/R) systems and equipment, ensuring they meet the stringent requirements of pharmaceutical manufacturing and storage environments. The role includes conducting regular inspections and preventative maintenance to ensure systems operate within required specifications.

Responsibilities

• Performs routine, preventative, and corrective maintenance of the site’s HVAC and refrigeration systems and equipment with limited supervision.
• Reports complex HVAC issues to senior technicians, management, or plant engineering.
• Oversees the installation of equipment, as required.
• Leads small projects related to HVAC systems and cold rooms.
• Provides recommendations to management to develop HVAC maintenance schedules.
• Mentors or provides training to HVAC technicians.
• Provides input to develop maintenance and repair plans for HVAC systems and equipment, including cold rooms.
• Follows all safety protocols and guidelines.
• Routinely tests and certifies HEPA filters to prescribed schedule.
• Assists with maintaining contracts with external vendors, as needed.
• Conducts work adhering to system air balancing activities under the guidance of senior technicians or management.
• Assists site functions to qualify and maintain production ventilation and equipment.
• Interacts with vendors, contractors, and other departments to schedule repairs and maintenance.
• Completes specialized training programs for HVAC systems.
• Works with Building Management Systems (BMS) monitoring program to trend and review HVAC system data.
• Collaborates cross-functionally with Utilities, Plant Engineering, and other support groups.
• Assists with revising and developing standard operating procedures (SOPs), as needed.
• Supports site operations and emergency work orders during off-hours, as needed.
• Performs other duties, as assigned.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED.
• 2-4 years of experience in HVAC maintenance and repairs.
• Completion of an apprenticeship program or vocational training in HVAC.
• Universal Refrigerant Recovery Certification (EPA 608 Certification).

Preferred Qualifications

• Associate degree in mechanical, electrical, applied engineering, or another relevant field.
• Prior experience with industrial HVAC systems.
• Prior experience working in a GMP manufacturing environment.
• Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) or equivalent work order management experience.
• Experience with troubleshooting and repairing refrigerant systems and testing/certifying HEPA filters.
• HVAC/Refrigeration Certification.

Skills

• Proficiency in basic maintenance crafts such as pipefitting, soldering, and refrigerant recovery.
• Operate utility equipment such as chillers, air handling units, freezers, cold rooms, incubators, and stability chambers.
• Knowledge of electrical, mechanical, and building automation systems.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Knowledge of regulations and codes for HVAC work.
• Ability to interpret blueprints and schematics.
• Effective communication, both written and oral.
• Ability to lift and move heavy equipment (up to 33 lbs).
• Knowledge of system air balancing activities required for clean room environments and pressure cascade.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

• Work in environments that may require respiratory protection.
• Work in mechanical/production spaces that may require hearing protection and enrollment in a hearing conservation program.
• Operate a motor vehicle or Powered Industrial Truck.
• Ability to discern audible cues.
• Ability to inspect or perform tasks with 20/20 corrected vision, including distinguishing color.
• Ability to ascend or descend ladders, scaffolding, ramps, etc.
• Ability to stand or sit for prolonged periods (up to 12 hours).
• Ability to conduct activities using repetitive motions that include wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
• Ability to bend, push, pull, reach (18” to 60” in height), and use twisting motions.
• Work in temperature ranges from 0-110°F.
• Work in outdoor elements such as precipitation and wind.
• Work in small, enclosed spaces or at heights greater than 4 feet.
