About the role
The NHP Quarantine Group Leader will assist the Supervisor with monitoring workflow and work assignments to assure required tasks are completed in assigned area. Serve as lead/primary technician and perform technical duties. Provide leadership and technical guidance and serve as a mentor to less experienced staff.
Responsibilities
- Assign and direct employees to perform routine animal husbandry, area housekeeping/ sanitation and animal care to ensure animal welfare and high quality animal care.
- Provide direction to department personnel; communicate and uphold company work standards, company policies and procedures, and department operating procedures by acting as a model for direct reports and peers.
- Audit department operations and documentation for accuracy, noting deviation.
- Assist with training new team members in performing duties in compliance with the site’s Standard Operating Procedures and required forms.
- Oversee adherence and proactively promote safety.
- Perform procedures and tasks related to department or area operations, including support-related tasks and operations-related administrative tasks.
- Deliver communications to animal husbandry staff concerning husbandry and shipment activities, receive information from Animal Care Supervisor(s) and Site Management Team and respond or channel communication to the proper recipient.
- Provide backup as needed to Supervisor or Manager.
- Provide input on staffing actions (hiring/separation, performance appraisal, etc.).
- Prepare paperwork for animal exports ensuring the safe packing, crating and loading of animals as well as animal import receiving documents following the delivery of an import.
- Provide backup for Facility Supervisor for animal import receipt and/or animal export.
- Provide oversight of the offloading and housing of animals and sanitation following an animal import, and/or the packing, loading and required paperwork for an animal export.
- Perform animal husbandry and general housekeeping, which can include feed, watering, and cleaning cages as required.
- Monitor animal health visually and by performing contract lab testing, as directed by the veterinary staff, while adhering to safety procedures.
- Perform all other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Education: High school diploma or General Education Degree (G.E.D.)
- Experience: Three or more years of related experience and/or training in a laboratory animal facility
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.
Qualifications
- Certification/Licensure: AALAS certification at the Assistant Technician (ALAT) level required; certification at Technician (LAT) or Technologist (LATG) level preferred
- Continued education in the area of management/ leadership preferred.
- Must be proficient in all procedures and tasks related to department or area operations, including support-related tasks and operations-related administrative tasks.
Physical Demands
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly stands and walks; uses hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; and reaches with hands and arms.
- The employee must be able to lift, hold and/or move up to 50 pounds; this includes equipment and animals.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
- The employee is exposed to fumes or airborne particles, unpleasant odors, and wet, humid and/or extreme temperature conditions.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
Pay
The pay for this position is $30/hour. Compensation varies based on factors including, but not limited to, experience, skills, education, and certifications.
