Responsibilities

  • Instructs students through lectures, demonstrations, and audiovisual aids.
  • Prepares course objectives and outlines following curriculum guidelines or state, district, and school requirements.
  • Assigns lessons and corrects homework.
  • Administers tests, records results, and issues reports to inform parents of student progress.
  • Maintains attendance records and classroom discipline.
  • Meets with parents to discuss student progress and problems.
  • Participates in faculty meetings, professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops.
  • May sponsor student activities or organizations, provide adult supervision for co-curricular events, serve on school/district committees, and collaborate with colleagues to improve instruction and school climate.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Completion of a fifth-year college or university teaching credential program.
  • Valid California Secondary credential authorizing teaching in the assigned subject area.
  • English Learner Authorization.
  • Valid California Driver’s License.

Skills

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret documents.
  • Ability to respond effectively to sensitive inquiries or complaints.
  • Ability to write lesson plans, speeches, and articles using original or innovative techniques.
  • Ability to make effective presentations to classrooms of students.
  • Proficiency in working with mathematical concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, GroupWise).
  • Ability to create a supportive classroom atmosphere where students develop their full potential.
  • Strong communication skills with students, parents, and staff.
  • Ability to organize classroom activities, maintain order, and meet deadlines for record-keeping (grades, attendance, etc.).

Physical Demands

  • Regularly required to stand, walk, talk, or hear.
  • Frequently required to sit.
  • Occasionally required to use hands to handle objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

The work environment is usually moderate in noise level.
