Human Resources Professional (Generalist or Coordinator level)
This position may be filled as an HR Generalist or an HR Coordinator, dependent on the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate.
About the Role
The Division of Information Technology Human Resources team supports over 350 employees in the Blacksburg area, the Greater Washington DC area, and various remote locations. This role is eligible for a hybrid working arrangement and requires a criminal conviction check.
HR Generalist
Responsibilities
- Deliver efficient operational talent management HR services, including talent acquisition coordination, position classification, and compensation management.
- Serve as the initial point of contact for employee relations matters and interpret HR policies.
- Act as the department’s liaison with campus offices (e.g., Division of Human Resources and Payroll) to address staff-related issues.
- Provide guidance to business units on compliance with employment laws, regulations, and industry standards.
- Participate in division-wide projects and cross-functional teams, including short-term stretch assignments for professional development.
- Develop job postings and position descriptions, review candidate pools, and advise on starting pay.
- Assist managers with basic employee relations matters.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience in HR functions (e.g., recruitment, compensation, performance management, employee relations).
- Experience developing job postings, reviewing candidate pools, advising on starting pay, or assisting with employee relations.
- Ability to interpret and apply policies, exercise sound judgment, and handle sensitive/confidential information.
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Experience using enterprise HR software and data query tools.
- Experience working with supervisors, leadership, and administration to deliver HR programs.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience delivering HR Generalist work in a large, complex organization.
- Professional certifications (e.g., SHRM).
- Demonstrated ability to investigate complex HR issues and compose insightful reports/recommendations.
- Experience with visa sponsorship.
HR Coordinator
Responsibilities
- Provide general office duties, recruitment support, transactional support, and records management.
- Offer guidance to ensure compliance with state/federal laws, university policies, and procedures.
- Handle sensitive/confidential information with discretion.
- Cross-train in HR Generalist duties as a stepping stone to that role.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in human resources or a business-related field, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Working experience demonstrating understanding of at least one HR program (e.g., recruitment, job analysis, classification/compensation, employee relations).
- Ability to handle sensitive/confidential information professionally.
- Exceptional organizational skills and ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Strong customer service skills, including professional communication in diverse environments.
- Ability to prioritize competing demands.
Pay
- HR Generalist: $58,000 – $65,000
- HR Coordinator: $47,000 – $50,000
Overtime-eligible (non-exempt). Full-time (40 hours/week), regular appointment.
