About the role
The HR Audit & Compliance Specialist serves as the primary point of contact for all HR-related audit activities, due diligence engagements, and internal and external data requests. This role ensures HR practices, records, and processes meet regulatory requirements and withstand scrutiny from auditors, investors, government agencies, and other stakeholders. The Specialist partners closely with Legal, Finance, IT, and business leadership to coordinate timely, accurate, and compliant responses to information requests. This position is based in Herndon, VA headquarters with limited travel for team meetings and follows a hybrid schedule (3 days per week in-office) after the first month of training and onboarding.
Responsibilities
- Audit Coordination & Support
- Serve as the primary HR liaison for internal audit teams, external auditors, regulatory examiners, and third-party assessors.
- Coordinate and manage end-to-end audit activities including scheduling, document collection, walkthroughs, and remediation tracking.
- Prepare and organize HR documentation packages in response to audit requests, ensuring completeness, accuracy, and timeliness.
- Track audit findings and open items; partner with HR leadership to develop and implement corrective action plans.
- Maintain a central audit log and calendar to monitor recurring audit cycles, deadlines, and deliverables.
- Due Diligence
- Lead HR workstream for M&A due diligence, including compilation and review of headcount, compensation, benefits, employment agreements, severance obligations, and open litigation.
- Support integration activities related to HR systems, policies, and employee data harmonization.
- Respond to due diligence questionnaires and virtual data room requests accurately and within timelines.
- Data Requests & Reporting
- Manage and fulfill HR data requests from internal stakeholders (Finance, Legal, IT) and external parties (government agencies, benefits vendors, insurance carriers, lenders).
- Ensure all data disclosures comply with applicable privacy laws including GDPR, CCPA, HIPAA, and state-level equivalents.
- Coordinate responses to government reporting requirements (EEO-1, ACA, OSHA, etc.).
- Build and maintain standard report templates to enable consistent, repeatable responses to common requests.
- Compliance & Policy Management
- Monitor federal, state, and local employment law changes and assess impact on HR policies, processes, and documentation.
- Conduct periodic HR compliance self-assessments and readiness reviews to proactively identify gaps.
- Maintain and update HR policy library, ensuring policies are current, properly approved, and consistently applied.
- Support SOX compliance activities related to HR controls, including segregation of duties and access reviews.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Accounting, or a related field.
- Working knowledge of employment laws and HR regulations (HIPAA, ACA, EEO-1, etc.).
- Experience handling confidential data with discretion and in compliance with applicable privacy regulations.
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines simultaneously.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; able to present complex information clearly to diverse audiences.
Preferred Qualifications
- PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP, or SHRM-SCP certification.
- Proficiency with Rippling or other HRIS platforms and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Demonstrated experience supporting internal or external audits, including document production and audit response management.
- Experience supporting HR due diligence in M&A transactions.

Pay
The pay range for this role is $60,000 - $70,000 USD per year (Herndon, VA).
Schedule
Hybrid schedule (3 days per week in-office) after the first month of training and onboarding.
