About the Role

The Assistant Director of Buildings and Grounds is responsible for leading the daily operations of the physical plant, daily maintenance, event management, cleanliness, and safety for the entire campus, including grounds, academic and administrative buildings, equipment, and vehicles. This position also oversees related services supporting the School’s programs, faculty, and staff, and reports directly to the Managing Director of Facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Actively participate in the planning, scheduling, and supervision of facilities staff and outside contractors, including third-party facilities and housekeeping contractors.
  • Perform skilled and semi-skilled hands-on maintenance tasks (e.g., light electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and HVAC troubleshooting) alongside the team.
  • Manage long-term vendor relationships, including custodial, grounds, waste management, and HVAC.
  • Directly supervise Facilities Maintenance and Custodial contractors to ensure work is performed satisfactorily.
  • Plan, schedule, and supervise maintenance and repair of campus buildings, equipment, and related services.
  • Oversee planned maintenance of all vehicles and equipment owned or leased by the school.
  • Manage setup, execution, and tear-down of school events and outside rentals.
  • Coordinate outside contractors and actively participate in campus snow and ice removal operations, including early morning/after-hours response to winter weather events.
  • Assist the Managing Director of Facilities in long-range planning of the school’s building and grounds infrastructure.
  • Assist in communicating the progress of all maintenance, construction, and related projects and issues.
  • Utilize the maintenance software program, Incident IQ, to monitor work requests, preventative, and deferred maintenance of buildings, grounds, and equipment.
  • Assess individual team member strengths and delegate daily tasks to maximize efficiency, foster professional growth, and ensure high-quality workmanship.
  • Mentor, motivate, and manage a diverse team, fostering a collaborative and accountable work culture.
  • Serve as a contact for after-hours facility emergencies and participate in an on-call rotation as needed.
  • Operate computerized Building Management Systems (BMS) for HVAC monitoring and scheduling.

Requirements

  • A degree in Facilities Management or equivalent work experience.
  • A minimum of five years of building and grounds management experience and/or licensure in one or more relevant trades (plumbing, HVAC, pipefitting, electrical).
  • Extensive knowledge of all areas of construction and maintenance.
  • Excellent planning skills to develop and oversee maintenance and construction plans.
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills to work effectively with students, faculty, staff, and outside vendors.
  • Proficiency with Apple products, Google Workspace, and computerized maintenance management software.
  • Experience with computerized Building Management Systems (BMS) for HVAC monitoring and scheduling.
  • Proficient understanding of OSHA and other government regulations; OSHA10 Certification is a plus.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record.

  • Excellent computer skills, including familiarity with maintenance management software.

Physical Requirements

  • Standing/sitting for long periods of time.
  • Bending, lifting, pushing, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and stooping.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to reach at and above shoulder height to access higher areas of equipment.
  • Capability to adapt to frequent changes in position throughout the workday.
  • Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or on the telephone.
  • Use of hands and fingers for manipulation, computer keyboard use, educational tools, play equipment, and performing first aid and CPR.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and depth perception.

Pay

$80,000–100,000 annually, based on education and experience.
