HSRC Process Engineer III

About the Role

The Process Engineer III is responsible for improving the safety, reliability, cost effectiveness, and profitability of refinery processing units and operating systems. This role involves identifying areas for improvement, designing and implementing enhancements, and serving as a technical point of contact and process expert for assigned refinery systems and at least one additional operating area or technology. The engineer supports all HRC departments, including Management, Operations, Safety, Environmental, Marketing, and Human Resources, and represents HRC Management in interactions with internal and external personnel.

Responsibilities

Operations Support

• Perform process monitoring on day-to-day operations and advise management and engineering of developing issues.
• Identify and troubleshoot process limitations or problems and lead resolution efforts.
• Follow trends in operational data, identify potential problems early, and work toward resolution.
• Assist Operations in unit or system start-up, shutdown, and preparations for equipment maintenance.
• Reduce costs through energy conservation, unit optimization, and other process improvements.
• Identify and advise on design or operational changes to maintain process effectiveness.
• Advise Management on operational changes needed to achieve process goals.
• Perform PSM functions, including HAZOP participation, resolution of HAZOP recommendations, and MOC preparation and review.
• Assist Operational Specialists in performing their duties.
• Support Operations and Mechanical personnel in resolving technical issues.
• Assist in training, particularly on the technical aspects of processes.

Process Improvement

• Identify changes to improve safety, reliability, and profitability of process units or systems.
• Develop and design process unit or system changes.
• Prepare MOCs and obtain support and/or funding for changes.
• Assist in commissioning and troubleshooting unit or system changes.
• Improve unit and system procedures.

Technical Point Contact

• Ensure awareness of and compliance with all environmental rules applicable to assigned units and systems.
• Provide technical assistance to the Environmental, Health & Safety Department for regulatory compliance and development.
• Support other organizational departments with technical expertise related to processes and systems.
• Demonstrate proficiency in engineering and design software.
• Lead formal root cause analysis discussions to prevent recurrence of issues.
• Assist in the development and growth of technical and hourly personnel.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from a four-year college or university.
• Five to eight years of related experience in refining, chemical, or a related industry.
• Valid driver’s license.

Schedule

• Subject to periodic “on-call” duty and non-scheduled call-ins.
• Subject to periodic turnaround technical support, including holidays and night shifts.

Additional Information

This position requires certification to use respiratory protection, including:

• Fresh air work requiring a tight-fitting full-face mask and a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) weighing up to 35 lbs.
• Conditions may include routine maintenance, operations activities, or emergency rescue in atmospheric concentrations immediately dangerous to life and health.
• Requires sufficient pulmonary and respiratory health; facial hair that interferes with the facepiece seal or valve function is prohibited.
