HSRC Process Engineer II

About the role

The Process Engineer II provides operations support, technical guidance, and troubleshooting for refinery processing units and operating systems. This role focuses on maintaining the safety, reliability, effectiveness, and profitability of operations while also identifying and implementing improvements. The engineer serves as a primary technical point of contact and process expert for assigned refinery systems, supporting various departments such as Management, Operations, Safety, Environmental, Marketing, and Human Resources.

Responsibilities

• Operations Support:
  • Perform process monitoring on day-to-day operations.
  • Identify and troubleshoot process limitations/problems and lead resolution efforts.
  • Follow trends in operational data to identify potential problems early and work toward resolution.
  • Assist Operations in unit or system start-up, shutdown, and preparations for equipment maintenance.
  • Reduce costs through energy conservation, unit optimization, and other improvements.
  • Identify needed design or operational changes to maintain process effectiveness.
  • Advise Management of operational changes needed to achieve process goals.
  • Perform PSM functions, including HAZOP participation, resolution of HAZOP recommendations, MOC preparation, and review.
  • Assist Operational Specialists in performing their duties.
  • Support Operations and Mechanical personnel in resolving issues.
  • Assist in training, particularly on the technical aspects of processes.
• Process Improvement:
  • Identify changes to improve safety, reliability, and profitability of process units or systems.
  • Develop and design attractive process unit or system changes.
  • Prepare MOCs and obtain support and/or funding for changes.
  • Assist in commissioning and troubleshooting of unit or system changes.
  • Improve unit and system procedures.
• Technical Point Contact:
  • Become aware of all environmental rules applicable to units and systems and assist in compliance.
  • Provide technical assistance to the Environmental, Health & Safety Department for regulation maintenance and development.
  • Support other organizational departments with technical assistance specific to processes and systems.
  • Use engineering design/rating software proficiently.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from a four-year college or university.
• Three to six years of related experience in refining, chemical, or a related industry.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Ability to work in a team environment with leadership and motivational skills for peers.
• Self-motivated with a desire to learn and develop new skills.
• Exhibit a “can-do” attitude and spirit of cooperation to support management objectives.
• Subject to periodic “on-call” duty, non-scheduled call-ins, and turnaround technical support, including holidays and night shifts.
• Certification to use respiratory protection, including:
  • Fresh air work requiring a tight-fitting full-face mask and a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) weighing up to 35 lbs.
  • Use in routine maintenance, operations activities, or emergency rescue scenarios, including in immediately dangerous to life and health (IDLH) atmospheric concentrations.
  • Sufficient pulmonary and respiratory health; facial hair that interferes with facepiece sealing or valve function is prohibited.
