About the role

The HSET Superintendent is responsible for managing and mentoring the project underground safety team in all aspects related to HSE (Health, Safety and Environment), including HSE management systems, regulatory and client compliance, project risk management, compliance to HSE Standards, Occupational Hygiene, and Injury/Illness management.

In this position, the HSET Superintendent will interface with MSHA and State Mine Inspectors regarding compliance with all aspects of health and safety under the direction of the Project Manager and Project Superintendent. The Safety Superintendent supports operations and management in implementing and continuously operating all RUSAC safety plans and applicable federal and state regulations to facilitate Redpath’s Safety-First, Last and Always practices.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise site safety personnel and HSE operations.
  • Ensure site compliance with Redpath standards, MSHA standards, ATF regulations, applicable state regulations, and client requirements.
  • Oversee the Site Fatality Prevention program.
  • Work with new clients in the early stages of the job to establish rapport with client safety and Redpath safety.
  • Assist in the startup of projects and work on-site during early phases to help set up the safety department.
  • Update and maintain MSHA training plans.
  • Review and evaluate all MSHA citations; challenge citations as needed through the MSHA litigation process.
  • Conduct investigations and lead other safety personnel in all serious accidents or injuries; coordinate with MSHA and client as needed.
  • Facilitate and train personnel in Incident Investigations for basic/root cause analysis.
  • Support employees and supervisors in conducting risk assessments.
  • Develop and review all HSE reports.
  • Ensure all departments are aware of obligations regarding compliance with legislative and client requirements, and conditions of the project contract and licenses.
  • Provide support to the project by maintaining a constant visible presence in the field, performing underground site visits across the entire project area of responsibility.
  • Inform the project leadership team and supervision of any new or conflicting legislative matters that could impact the project.
  • Implement the Project Safety Management Plan (SMP) to ensure a safe work environment for all employees, contractors, and visitors.
  • Ensure all known incidents are reported immediately and incident corrective actions are followed up and completed in a timely manner.
  • Review safety obligations of clients and ensure they are carried out as per the terms of the contract and communicated to all employees and leadership.
  • Conduct RSP training for new Redpath supervisors.
  • Investigate workplace situations and address safety-related complaints from employees.
  • Responsible for hiring qualified personnel and reviewing disciplinary actions for employees.
  • Develop and evaluate employee performance.
  • Ensure work areas are safe and free of hazards through monitoring day-to-day operations and guiding the safety team and site supervisors.
  • Comprehend and provide written and verbal instructions as required to perform duties efficiently.
  • Comply with daily, weekly, and monthly safety directives, policies, and procedures.
  • Maintain confidentiality with respect to Redpath and client information.
  • Comply with and ensure compliance with Redpath’s Policies and Procedures as detailed in appropriate manuals, handbooks, directives, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
  • If required to operate a company vehicle, meet the requirements to be an eligible user of company vehicles; must possess a current State Driver’s License and acceptable driving record.
  • Able to work in excess of 40 hours a week, including overtime, day and night shifts, weekends, holidays, and shift rotations.
  • Compliance with Redpath Core Competencies is an essential duty and responsibility.
  • Assist other job functions as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety or related field preferred.
  • AAS Occupational Development (Certified) preferred.
  • Mine Safety Professional (CMSP) certification preferred.
  • Mine Rescue Trainer and MSHA Instructor (Surface and Underground) certification.
  • Special Investigation Training.
  • 10 years of Health and Safety experience, preferably in an underground mining environment.
  • 4 years of leadership experience.
  • Experience in Mine Inspection Techniques (including Health Sampling).
  • Proven accident investigation experience.
  • Trained in all aspects of Surface and Underground mining.
