About the role
The Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) Specialist supports the implementation and ongoing execution of site HSE programs to reinforce GoalZERO behaviors and drive continuous improvement in safety, health, and environmental performance. This role focuses on executing compliance activities, supporting risk reduction initiatives, and promoting safe work practices across employees and contractors. The position works closely with operations, maintenance, engineering, and plant leadership, as well as external regulatory agencies, and supports Operational Excellence initiatives by reinforcing standard work, identifying improvement opportunities, and promoting disciplined execution of HSE processes.
Responsibilities
- Support implementation and execution of site HSE programs including life critical processes, industrial hygiene, emergency response, environmental compliance, and waste management
- Execute day-to-day activities to support compliance with OSHA, EPA, TCEQ, and applicable standards such as ANSI and NFPA
- Participate in incident investigations and Job Hazard Analyses; assist in identifying root causes and tracking corrective actions to closure
- Support Management of Change (MOC) reviews by evaluating HSE risks and assisting with mitigation actions
- Auxiliary internal audits, regulatory inspections, and compliance assessments
- Support contractor safety activities including field observations and verification of safe work practices
- Maintain and update HSE systems, records, and documentation to ensure compliance and audit readiness
- Monitor HSE performance data and assist in tracking trends and corrective action progress
- Support Operational Excellence by reinforcing standard work practices, identifying gaps in HSE process execution, and contributing to continuous improvement initiatives
- Participate in HSE committees, emergency response teams, and employee engagement initiatives
- Maintain a strong field presence to observe work practices, identify hazards, reinforce standard work, and support consistent execution of HSE processes
- Support industrial hygiene activities including coordination of exposure monitoring and tracking of results
- Auxiliary HSE training and reinforcement of procedures and safe work practices
- Build effective working relationships across operations, maintenance, engineering, and leadership teams
Requirements
- Education: High school diploma or GED required. Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science, or related technical discipline preferred.
- Work Experience: 3–5 years of experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably in an HSE-related role.
- Certifications: Professional certification preferred (e.g., CIH, CSP, SMS, OHST).
- Knowledge & Skills: Working knowledge of OSHA, EPA, and applicable regulatory requirements; understanding of industrial safety, industrial hygiene, incident investigation, and emergency response principles; familiarity with behavioral-based safety concepts; proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook); strong communication and documentation skills; ability to manage multiple priorities and work collaboratively across teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- Completion of OSHA 10- or 30-hour General Industry training
- CPR, First Aid, and AED certification
- Prior participation in HSE programs, teams, or initiatives
Work Environment and Physical Demands
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods (up to 8 hours)
- Ability to climb stairs and ladders and work at heights
- Ability to bend, kneel, twist, and lift up to 50 pounds
- Ability to work in indoor and outdoor environments including exposure to heat, cold, dust, noise, and odors
- Required use of personal protective equipment including hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, steel-toed boots, and other PPE as required
