HS CTE Health Science/Medical Terminology Teacher - MPA

About the Role

The CTE Health Science/Medical Terminology Teacher instructs students in foundational medical concepts, healthcare career pathways, and the universal language of medicine. The ideal candidate leverages real-world healthcare experience to bridge academic theory with practical industry skills.

Responsibilities

• Curriculum Delivery: Teach foundational health science concepts and specialized medical terminology courses aligned with state CTE standards.
• Instructional Design: Create engaging, hands-on lessons, including laboratory simulations, medical case studies, and interactive vocabulary exercises.
• Language Mastery: Guide students in breaking down, pronouncing, and applying medical prefixes, suffixes, combining forms, and root words.
• Career Preparation: Introduce students to diverse healthcare pathways, industry professional standards, and ethical medical practices.
• Student Leadership: Advisor or support the local chapter of HOSA (Future Health Professionals) to promote leadership and skills competition.
• Industry Alignment: Maintain an active Program Advisory Committee comprising local healthcare professionals to ensure curriculum relevance.
• Classroom Management: Maintain a safe, organized, and collaborative classroom environment modeled after professional clinical settings.
• Assessment & Tracking: Evaluate student progress through written exams, oral terminology drills, and practical skill demonstrations.
• School/Community Relations: Establish cooperative relations and communicate with parents/guardians when appropriate.
• Communicate clearly, consistently, and positively with parents via all appropriate mediums.
• Cooperate with members of the administration, other staff, and with CSAL, Inc.
• Maintain confidentiality regarding student records.
• Participate in parent communication activities and extracurricular activities to ensure a positive school culture and provide support for students and staff.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university preferred.
• Valid State Teaching Credential in Career and Technical Education (Health Science/Medical Technology) or eligibility to pursue an alternative pathway.
• Minimum of 2–3 years of verifiable full-time work experience in the healthcare industry (e.g., Nurse, Medical Assistant, EMT, or Allied Health Professional).
• Able to pass required background check and DCFS State Central Registry Review.
• Eligible to work in the US without sponsorship.

• Medical Expertise: Deep understanding of human anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, and comprehensive medical language.
• Instructional Skills: Ability to differentiate instruction for diverse learners and implement effective classroom management strategies.
• Technology Literacy: Proficiency with learning management systems (LMS), grading software, and modern educational technology.
• Communication: Exceptional verbal and written communication skills to effectively collaborate with students, parents, administration, and healthcare partners.

Physical Demands

• Ability to hear, understand, and distinguish speech and/or other sounds (e.g., in person, virtually, on the telephone, or over the PA system).
• Somewhat stressful due to frequent student activity.
• Standing for long periods of time and walking frequently, climbing stairs, bending, kneeling, pushing and pulling, reaching, and lifting.
• Constantly communicating with others to exchange information accurately, loudly, softly, or quickly.
• Able to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently.
• Physical restraint of another person or persons as needed.

Work Environment

• This is a 9-month, onsite, in-person position.
• Usual school working conditions; may be noisy during high student traffic.
• Temperature may vary from very cold to very hot due to weather and location.
• Length of workday varies from school schedule to extended days due to evening activities and emergencies.
• May require work on weekends, holidays, and scheduled school breaks.
