HR and Payroll generalist

About the role
We are seeking an experienced Payroll and HR Generalist with a strong attention to detail and the utmost respect for confidentiality and professionalism. The Payroll and HR Generalist will be responsible for processing two bi-weekly U.S. payrolls and one bi-weekly Canadian payroll, supporting our U.K. and Ireland payroll accountants, benefits administration, payroll journal entries, and reconciliation of payroll and benefit-related GL accounts. This role also includes parts of onboarding and other HR-related tasks.
Responsibilities
Payroll
- Process multiple bi-weekly payrolls that include salary changes, benefit deductions, commission payouts, bonuses, garnishments, and taxes.
- Submit retirement benefits and HSA contributions, verifying accuracy.
- Calculate final pay for terminations and beginning pay for new hires.
- Complete and respond to employment verification and unemployment state queries.
- Enter newly eligible employees into the various benefit sites and calculate payroll deductions for entry into the payroll system.
- Email new participants of their enrollment in our retirement plan.
- Respond to staff questions related to payroll and benefits and process changes in a timely manner.
- Research and resolve problems associated with payroll, tax, and benefits.
- Reconcile the general ledger with monthly related payroll transactions.
- Prepare payroll journal entries for entry into the General Ledger.
- Perform annual year-end reporting, including but not limited to W-2s, ACA Compliance Reporting, and Workers Compensation audits.
- Assist with the preparation of Form 5500 and Safe Harbor Notice distribution.
- Update payroll systems with annual state and federal unemployment rate changes and payroll limitations.
- Other duties as required.
Benefits Administration
- Handle benefits enrollment for new hires and changes for existing employees.
- Update termination status in benefits and enroll in COBRA.
- Assist in the annual open enrollment process and update payroll deductions.
Onboarding
- Complete new hire checklist and ensure all items are complete.
- Enter new employees in the HRIS system.
- Meet with new hires to go over documentation.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in human resources or accounting preferred.
- At least 3 years of payroll experience.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
