About the role

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced HPC Linux System Administrator to join the team at Johnson Space Center (JSC) supporting the Flight Sciences Laboratory (FSL) on the Amentum JETS contract. The FSL is one of JSC's primary compute labs, hosting a wide variety of analyses that support all human-spaceflight programs at NASA, including the International Space Station (ISS), Orion, Space Launch System (SLS), Commercial Crew Program, Human Landing System (HLS), Moon Base, and many others.

The FSL systems currently comprise over 700 machines, 26,000 cores, and over 10 PB of storage, serving more than 1,000 users. You will work with a team of HPC System Administrators to build and maintain all FSL services, including High Performance Compute (HPC) administration, high-end Linux workstation administration, high-speed networking, and high-speed parallel filesystem administration.

Responsibilities

  • Administer High Performance Compute (HPC) systems and high-end Linux workstations
  • Manage high-speed networking and parallel filesystems
  • Implement and optimize container technologies in an HPC environment
  • Investigate system problems and proactively monitor system health
  • Support FSL users in effectively utilizing the systems to advance NASA’s human spaceflight mission
  • Collaborate with the team on day-to-day tasks, including troubleshooting and user support

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent certification in a related area
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in Linux system administration or a related field
  • At least 2 years of experience in HPC administration
  • Experience with large-scale system administration
  • Proficiency in system configuration management and container-based HPC workflows
  • Experience with HPC job scheduler administration and complex CI/CD workflows
  • Demonstrated problem-solving, planning, and communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with RedHat-based systems
  • Experience with container technologies such as Docker, Podman, and Apptainer
  • Knowledge of Lustre high-speed parallel filesystems and InfiniBand
  • Experience with Ansible, Foreman, SLURM resource manager, and SPACK software manager
  • Experience with log consolidation, monitoring, and Git/GitLab for CI/CD
  • Understanding of the Johnson Space Center campus network and NASA security mechanisms (e.g., security plans, POAMs, ATOs, risk assessments)
