Hourly Crossing Guard

About the role

Under the supervision of the School Principal, this position provides assistance in the control of vehicular and pedestrian traffic at an assigned location to ensure the safety of school children, the safe and orderly flow of vehicular traffic, and related duties as required. This role involves traffic control procedures on and off school property, often on roadways with heavy, complex traffic conditions.

Responsibilities

• Provide clear, concise hand signals to stop vehicular and/or pedestrian traffic to ensure safe crossing for school children.
• Ensure signals are understood and obeyed before allowing traffic or pedestrians to move, directing children to cross only at designated locations.
• Identify and report any present or potential traffic hazards to the Sheriff’s Office as soon as possible.
• Report vehicle code violations and write reports as necessary.
• Attend required training sessions and meetings as requested by supervisors, the Sheriff’s Office, or the Safety & Security Office.
• Enforce school rules and regulations, reporting students or pedestrians who do not follow safe crossing procedures.

• Maintain a clean, neat appearance appropriate to the position.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Valid Virginia Driver’s License.
• Must be 18 years of age or older.
• Must be certified by the Sheriff’s Office to conduct Crossing Guard duties.

Skills

• Complete Handle with Care Training.
• Complete First Aid/CPR/AED Training.
• Direct and control vehicular and pedestrian traffic using arm and hand signals after training by the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office and Stafford County Public Schools’ Safety & Security Office.
• Use hand-held stop sign, reflector vest, cones, whistle, gloves, and communication equipment.
• Assess traffic flow, speed, and direction to group pedestrians logically.
• Provide own transportation, be punctual, and reliable.
• Work cooperatively in a team environment to meet goals.
• Organize and perform work independently.
• Meet deadlines for multiple projects while maintaining quality and effort.

Knowledge

• Basic safety rules for school buildings.
• Safe driving rules and procedures for Crossing Guards.
• Techniques for communicating with children and adults.
• English and grammar usage.
• Current Virginia traffic laws and emergency procedures.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

• Work environment includes both indoor and outdoor settings with regular exposure to weather conditions near roadways, moving traffic, and moderate noise.
• Exposure to extreme hot or cold temperatures; no exposure to chemicals or poor air quality.
• Light work requiring exertion of up to 20 pounds of force to move or lift objects.
• Physical abilities required include:
  • Standing or sitting for prolonged periods.
  • Repetitive movement of hands, wrists, or fingers.
  • Repetitive force on the back or lower body.
  • Feeling, grasping, or holding objects by hand.
  • Visual identification of colors and objects in low light or distant conditions.
  • Verbal and written communication.
