Hourly Cook
About the role
The City of Lynchburg seeks qualified hourly Cooks to join our team in preparing and serving meals in a secure detention facility. Applicants must be available to work all shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Responsibilities
- Prepares and cooks meats, vegetables, and other foods in accordance with a set menu.
- Readies meals for transport and serving in each pod.
- Bakes pastries and breads.
- Operates standard cooking equipment such as ranges, mixers, food choppers, and other kitchen equipment.
- Assists in estimating and ordering food supplies.
- Cleans kitchen and equipment; washes dishes.
- Receives and stacks food supplies.
- Maintains health and sanitary standards.
- Conducts routine inventory count of silverware.
- Dates and rotates food on shelves when food is delivered.
- Carries out trash and garbage.
- May be required to assist with special assignments during emergencies.
Requirements

- Completion of eleventh grade and considerable experience in cooking foods in large quantities.
- Equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Prior to employment, must have a Criminal Record Check, reference checks completed, and Child Protective Services check initiated.
- Prior to onset of employment, must have a tuberculin and drug screen as part of a physical examination.
- Must successfully complete IS100 and IS700 National Incident Management (NIMS) training within 90 days of employment.
- Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Must obtain ServSafe certification.
