About the role

The Physician's Assistant Nocturnist practices medicine under the supervision of a physician, providing diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive health care services as delegated. Working as a member of the health care team, they take medical histories, examine and treat patients, order and interpret laboratory tests and x-rays, and make diagnoses. They may treat minor injuries by suturing, splinting, and casting, record progress notes, instruct and counsel patients, order and carry out therapies, and update charts. When eligible, they may prescribe some medications. When working in a surgical arena, they may provide preoperative and postoperative care and possibly work as first or second assistants during major surgeries. Responsibilities

  • Provides advanced level of direct and indirect care to individual patients/families and/or groups of patients/families in collaboration with physicians and interdisciplinary team members.
  • Demonstrates collaborative leadership with researchers, other health professionals, divisions, and departments to generate knowledge and make practice changes based on research findings, as well as the results of the organizational and departmental quality improvement processes.
  • Provides leadership in meeting system, organizational, division, and departmental goals.
  • Demonstrates accountability for professional responsibilities and self-development.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Physician Assistant studies
  • 1–3 years of experience as a Physician Assistant
  • Licensed Physician Assistant in Tennessee (Tennessee Board of Physician Assistants)
  • Physician Assistant-Certified (National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants)
  • Licensed Physician Assistant in Mississippi (Mississippi State Board of Medical Licensure) – preferred

Physical demands

  • Frequent invasive and non-invasive patient contact
  • Exposure to patient body fluids as well as hazardous or poisonous materials
  • Exposure to excessive heat or cold as required
  • Ability to react quickly to emergency situations
  • Frequent travel outside hospital
  • Frequent handling or administering of narcotics
  • Ability to read and write to communicate orally and in writing with other individuals
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. without assistance and push and pull up to 250 lbs.
  • Ability to sit in one place, stand, walk, squat, kneel, reach, twist, crawl, and bend throughout the shift
  • Good hand-eye coordination
