Position Details

The position is a PRN (Per Request Notified) position reporting directly to the APP Manager. Schedules are developed every three months to provide coverage for PTO, FMLA, illness call-outs, and periods of high patient census across multiple Wake Region Hospital Medicine locations. The schedule is subject to change based on operational needs, with changes communicated no later than 6:00 p.m. the day prior, whenever feasible.

Experience Required

  • Graduation from an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program.
  • Nurse Practitioners must hold a Master’s Degree or Doctorate in Nursing Practice with Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP) or Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP) board certification.
  • Physician Assistants must hold certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA); CAQ certification preferred.
  • Current license to practice as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant in North Carolina.
  • Current prescriptive privileges and DEA registration.

Job Summary

Specialty Care Advanced Practice Providers provide concentrated services within a designated specialty, caring for both acute and chronically ill patients. The PRN Hospital Medicine APP delivers comprehensive inpatient care while providing flexible staffing support across Wake Region Hospital Medicine locations to ensure continuity of care and operational excellence.

Essential Functions

  • Perform initial and follow-up medical histories and physical examinations.
  • Conduct daily inpatient assessments and ongoing patient management.
  • Evaluate, admit, consult, and manage hospitalized adult medicine patients.
  • Develop and implement treatment plans in collaboration with supervising physicians.
  • Order, interpret, and manage laboratory, radiology, and other diagnostic studies.
  • Prescribe medications and therapeutic interventions within scope of practice.
  • Perform minor medical procedures as appropriate and within credentialing guidelines.
  • Carefully coordinate care with physicians, nursing, pharmacy, case management, specialists, and ancillary departments.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary rounds and discharge planning activities.
  • Document all patient encounters, assessments, procedures, and treatment plans accurately and timely in the electronic medical record.
  • Serve as a patient advocate while promoting quality, safety, and evidence-based care.
  • Adapt quickly to varying practice locations, provider teams, and patient care environments while maintaining high standards of clinical excellence.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequent walking, standing, sitting, lifting, reaching, bending, stooping, pushing, and pulling.
  • Must be able to lift and support up to 35 pounds while assisting with patients, medical equipment, and supplies.
  • Must possess intact senses of sight, hearing, smell, touch, and finger dexterity.
  • Must communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Must be able to perform effectively in stressful clinical situations.
  • Must be flexible to work varying schedules, including day and swing shifts, weekends, and holidays based on departmental needs.
