Hospital Lab Technician 2

About the role

This position performs duties of a HLT I Central Processing, assisting with training students and new employees, monitoring workflow, troubleshooting problems, receiving and processing orders and specimens for Send Out Testing, assisting Providers and Clinical Lab employees with Send Out Test Ordering and Collection, and performing other tasks as assigned.

Responsibilities

• Task A: Performs duties as a Hospital Lab Technician 1, including receiving and processing specimens, ensuring proper labeling, separating and aliquoting specimens, delivering STAT or priority specimens, and adhering to time requirements.

• Task B: Assists in training students and new employees in Central Processing section, providing instruction on workflow and processing of specimens and orders in APeX and Sunquest systems.

• Task C: Monitors workflow to ensure specimens are processed within established time lines, and communicates with clinicians and section supervisors regarding issues.

• Task D: Assists in troubleshooting problems with specimen receiving and test orders, documenting issues and communicating with relevant parties.

• Task E: Receives and processes orders and specimens for Send-Out Testing, verifying specimens, organizing samples, preparing requisitions, and preparing tests for courier pickup.

• Task F: Assists Providers and Clinical Lab employees with Send Out Test Ordering and Collection, adhering to hospital standards and facilitating test results.

• Task G: Performs additional duties as assigned, including managing inventory, ordering supplies, maintaining equipment temperature logs, and addressing discrepancies.

• Task H: Works closely under the guidance of Lab Processing SUPV1, completing assigned tasks within agreed-upon timeframes.

Qualifications

• Graduation from college with coursework in biological sciences, or two years of college with coursework in natural, physical, or social sciences, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

• One to two years experience working in a laboratory or other clinical environment.

• Demonstrated knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.

• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with physicians, requesting departments, and other staff, including ability to clearly explain complex medical information in both verbal and written form.

• Proficient with PC, Windows, Word, Excel, etc.
