Hospice Volunteer Coordinator (Horry County)

About the role

Coordinates and evaluates the volunteers program. Recruits, interviews, and selects volunteers for the Hospice Programs. Plans, implements, and evaluates at least three (3) volunteers training programs per year. Facilitates monthly volunteer meetings, in-services, and/or support groups. Assigns volunteers to hospice patients as needed. Coordinates and evaluates individual volunteer activities. Matches volunteers to patients/families and survivors and volunteers for office support. Completes volunteer performance evaluations annually. Keeps a list of active and inactive volunteers. Provides emotional support for individual volunteers, meets with volunteers individually and in groups. Calls each patient’s home during the first month of service to evaluate the quality of volunteer care 90 percent of time by random observation. Reviews volunteer documentation monthly. Provides Hospice Volunteer information to the community. Provides at least four (4) speaking engagements in the community a year to promote Hospice Volunteers. Participates in Fundraising activities, Newsletters, etc. Completes reports, documentation and other assignments in a timely manner. Submits monthly statistical reports, volunteers' mileage and reimbursement and volunteer hours with the assigned time frame 90 percent of the time. Maintains accurate records in volunteer folders 80 percent of the time. Represents the Hospice Department to patients, families, team members, and the community in a positive and professional manner. Attends team conferences, in-service and staff meetings on a regular basis 80 percent of the time.

Responsibilities

  • Recognizes signs & symptoms of actively dying patients and communicates this information to team member.
  • Presents a positive attitude to patients, families, and Hospice team members in the home and in the Hospice Office.
  • Demonstrates a team spirit and an attitude of cooperation 80 percent of the random observation.
  • Maintains “Open Door” Policy for all volunteers to use.
  • Assists volunteers to utilize the chain-of-command role in problem situations.
  • Counsels volunteers and takes appropriate action. Counseling takes place in a timely manner, in logical sequence according to the problem. Counseling is supported with education, supportive services and involves other staff members as needed.
  • Promotes ongoing volunteers' development activities.
  • Provides Hospice orientation to all new volunteers.
  • Facilitates ongoing required volunteer continuing education yearly – a minimum of one (1) hour/year for each volunteer. Identifies educational needs of volunteers and arranges for in-services programs when indicated.
  • Evaluates individual volunteers annually.

Requirements

Knowledge of hospice and end of life care. Experience working as a volunteer in Hospice or similar agency. Experience in coordinating volunteers or groups. Must have a valid South Carolina driver's license and vehicle available at all times. Bachelor’s degree in health counseling or psychology field preferred.
