Horizontal Directional Drillers (HDD) Operators

Our client is hiring experienced HDD Operators on behalf of a telecommunications infrastructure contractor building underground fiber across northern Nevada. This is a direct-hire, onsite position in Carson City.

About the role

Operate the rig on a dedicated bore crew, paired with a locator, to install conduit and fiber. All equipment, tooling, work vehicles, and safety gear are supplied. This role requires existing trade knowledge due to active work and immediate need.

Responsibilities

  • Operate HDD rigs (Vermeer, Ditch Witch, and comparable equipment) to complete pilot bores, reaming, and pullback operations.
  • Execute bore paths according to approved plans, profiles, and specifications, adjusting techniques for soil conditions and obstructions.
  • Coordinate with the HDD Locator to maintain proper depth, alignment, and clearance.
  • Oversee drilling fluid (mud) usage, mix ratios, and bore integrity.
  • Perform daily inspections, preventive maintenance, and minor repairs on drilling equipment.
  • Ensure all drilling operations comply with company safety policies and OSHA regulations.
  • Complete drilling logs, bore records, and daily production reports.
  • Communicate progress, issues, and equipment needs to supervision.

Requirements

  • Prior hands-on experience operating an HDD rig in telecom, utility, or underground construction. This is not a trainee position.
  • A working knowledge of at least one major rig platform (Vermeer or Ditch Witch) is necessary.
  • Strong understanding of bore planning, drilling techniques, drilling fluid management, and underground safety.
  • Ability to read construction drawings and bore profiles.
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States and at least 18 years of age.
  • Willingness to work overtime, typically around two additional hours per day.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and drug screen.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two or more years operating an HDD rig solo, from start to finish.
  • Experience across multiple rig classes, from compact units to large-diameter machines.
  • Background in telecom, fiber, or outside plant construction.
  • Experience in rock, cobble, or hard ground conditions.
  • Class A or Class B CDL.
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
  • Trenching and excavation or competent person training.
  • Experience with vacuum excavation, potholing, or trenching.

Work Environment

This is a physically demanding field role. Candidates must be able to work outdoors year-round in heat, cold, wind, and dust. The role involves lifting up to 50 pounds, standing, walking, and working on uneven ground for a full shift. Crews work in rural and high desert environments across northern Nevada, which may include remote job sites and potential encounters with wildlife. Some assignments may require travel or extended stays away from home. Required PPE must be worn for the full shift.
