Job Summary

SLCC Honors Program Peer Mentors assist and mentor students in navigating higher education by providing intentional and student-centered one-on-one and group mentorship support. They support Honors Program students, particularly First-Year students, in transitioning to SLCC, adjusting to college life, and understanding Honors Program requirements, as well as fostering a sense of belonging among students, staff, faculty, and the community.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities & Knowledge Skills & Abilities

  • Assisting Honors Program students in navigating higher education by providing intentional and student-centered one-on-one and group mentorship support
  • Serving as a liaison between Honors Program students and campus and community resources
  • Providing general communication support, such as managing the Honors Program newsletter and social media
  • Assisting in planning and promoting Honors Program activities and events
  • Assisting in outreach efforts to prospective Honors Program students
  • Promoting a supportive environment and serving as a positive role model and representative of the SLCC Honors Program
  • Attending and participating in all trainings, staff meetings, events, workshops, orientations, and graduation

Minimum Qualifications

  • Highest high school diploma or equivalent
  • Registered for at least 9 credits for Fall and Spring semesters
  • Currently enrolled at SLCC as an undergraduate student

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current Honors Program student
  • Demonstrate an ability to work with all groups of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, staff, and faculty, including those with disabilities
  • Be able to facilitate effective one-on-one and small group mentoring meetings
  • Demonstrate effective communication and listening skills, organization, teamwork, and a desire to learn and grow and develop as a peer mentor
  • Be able to participate in trainings, staff meetings, workshops
