Homeless Shelter Support Staff

General Description

The Shelter Support Staff position plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and well-being of individuals experiencing homelessness within the shelter.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Fill Weekend/Holiday shifts as required.
  • Maintain the safety and well-being of shelter participants, maintaining a safe and welcoming environment.
  • Enforce shelter policies and procedures, including those relating to substance use and illegal behavior.
  • To maintain cleanliness and organization within the shelter, staff will replenish interior storage as required, manage laundry to uphold linen availability, clean common areas by sweeping, vacuuming, and mopping, ensure the entryway remains free of clutter, and attend to any other tasks essential for maintaining order.
  • Absorb new guests through the intake process, rule review, and bed assignment.
  • Conduct regular rounds to ensure safety.
  • Answer telephone calls and referrals, responding to client needs.
  • Utilizes effective problem-solving techniques to resolve conflicts, employing strategies such as de-escalation and crisis intervention, as necessary.
  • Complete records, notes, and all reporting requirements accurately.
  • Identify and report safety concerns to the Shelter Program Manager.
  • Collaborate with staff, volunteers, and residents in addressing issues and ensuring compliance with rules.
  • Attend staff meetings and training courses as assigned.
  • Perform any other duties as required.

  • Maintains a positive and productive attitude regarding the center and the CAPSC Agency when interacting both within the program and with the greater community.

Employment Screening

  • Valid Driver's License and insured vehicle (100/300 minimum coverage) for use on the job or acceptable alternative, driving record check, criminal record check, randomized drug screening.
