Responsibilities

• Provides homemaking services such as bed making and light housework
• Plans, shops for, prepares, or assists with nutritious meals and prescribed diets, including clean-up of the kitchen area
• Accompanies patient to medical appointments as specified in the care plan
• Runs errands with patient/family’s agreement
• Provides companionship and socialization for the patient
• Observes the patient for changes in general physical and mental condition and reports any changes to the nurse
• Reminds patients to take their medication as prescribed and scheduled
• Assists to maintain safety in the home and notifies nurse of safety concerns
• Adheres to documentation and care procedures and standards of personal and professional conduct

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required
• Must successfully complete all sections of the Homemaker written test and complete the Homemaker skills testing by return demonstration
• One year of experience as a homemaker/companion for an adult or family member required
• Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language
• Must possess a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record
• Must be insurable under professional liability and crime coverage policies as specified by insurance carrier underwriting standards

Working Conditions and Special Requirements

• Sitting: up to 8 hours/day
• Standing: up to 6 hours/day
• Walking: up to 2 hours/day
• Lifting, transferring, pushing, or pulling patients or equipment/supplies: up to 50 pounds
• Driving: up to 6 hours/day
• Work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled
• Subject to exposure to patients with various disease processes
• May be exposed to infectious waste, disease, and conditions, including exposure to the AIDS and Hepatitis B viruses
• Risk category for exposure to bloodborne diseases: II
