Homebound Teacher Grade K through Twelve - District Wide

Role Overview & Purpose

Apart from providing instructional support to students who cannot attend regular classes due to certified physical or mental health conditions, this position ensures academic continuity by bridging the gap between the student's home (or medical facility) and their enrolled public school.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

• Deliver adapted lessons to individual students across various grade levels (K-12) based on materials, curriculum, and assignments provided by the student's regular classroom teachers.
• Cook up close with school homebound coordinators, counselors, classroom teachers, and Special Education case managers to align instruction and fulfill any IEP or 504 plan accommodations.
• Act as the primary school contact for the family, scheduling instruction sessions on regular school days and reporting any concerns regarding student progress or environment.
• Collect completed assignments, administer tests under proper security conditions, and return work promptly to the regular classroom teacher for formal grading.
• Maintain strict records of instruction hours, submit parental-signed daily timesheets, and document any sessions missed or cancelled by the family.

Minimum Qualifications & Requirements

• Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
• Licensure: A valid Tennessee Department of Education teaching certificate with proper grade or subject endorsements. (Many districts prefer or require Special Education endorsement).
• Background Check: Clear fingerprinting, TBI/FBI criminal background check, and Department of Children's Services registry check as required for all TN public school personnel.
• Logistics: Valid driver's license and reliable personal transportation, as the role requires traveling directly to students' homes or local medical facilities.
• Physical & Environmental Demands: Ability to work effectively in diverse, uncontrolled home environments. Capability to interact professionally with students experiencing acute, chronic, or catastrophic illnesses/injuries. Visual and auditory acuity sufficient to monitor student work, input data, and manage small-group or one-on-one virtual instructional tools if needed.

Employment Terms

• Status: Part-time, hourly, non-exempt, as-needed basis.
• Compensation: Paid at a set district hourly rate for direct instruction time.
