Home Office Underwriting Manager - Contract Surety
About the role
The Home Office Underwriting Manager position will report to the Regional Senior Managing Director. You will assist with the overall integrity of the division's contract surety portfolio, improve underwriting processes, and support the Regional Senior Managing Director with underwriting analysis, portfolio management, and reporting.
Responsibilities
- Assist with the overall integrity of the division’s contract surety portfolio
- Improve underwriting processes
- Assist the Regional Senior Managing Director with all home office matters surrounding underwriting analysis and reviews, portfolio management, and reporting
- Represent Bond by demonstrating superior underwriting expertise, high-level decision-making skills, and comprehensive business knowledge
- Support Regional Office sales and service objectives
- Maintain and assess the implementation of underwriting guidelines, sales objectives, service standards, and operational efficiencies
- Rigorously analyze underwriting information and assess most complex risks within the framework of company standards
- Manage a portfolio of business and set territory strategies for offices in the territory
- Serve as a referral underwriter for regional offices
- Aid region office underwriters and managers in creating solutions for customers
- Negotiate win/win solutions
- Analyze the portfolio of business in the territory
Requirements
- Deep technical knowledge of Surety products and processes, laws, regulations, terminology, and principles related to surety underwriting
- Interest and capability to serve as a resource on complex underwriting issues for the Contract Surety team
- Appreciation and desire to lead special projects and other duties to improve the Contract Surety product at Hartford
- Ability to balance the needs of multiple stakeholders when making underwriting decisions
- Team spirit and desire to work collaboratively
- Financial mindset to help make the best decisions
- Ability to own work and follow through on commitments
- Superior technical knowledge and sound decision-making and analytical skills
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree strongly preferred
- 8+ years of Contract Surety underwriting experience preferred
- Demonstrated success in developing and maintaining solid relationships with all internal and external business partners
- Excellent communication, written, interpersonal, and presentation skills
- Ability to think analytically about business problems, make recommendations, and propose solutions
- High energy self-starter who is resilient
- Strong time, organizational, and desk management skills
- Goal-oriented and delivers outcomes
- Ability to challenge the status quo and compete to win

Benefits
Benefits offered may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is: $112,800 - $205,200.
Pay
The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency, and demonstration of competencies required for the role.
Schedule
The position can have a Hybrid or Remote work arrangement. Candidates who live near an office will have an expectation of working in an office 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday), while those who do not live near an office will have a remote work arrangement, with the expectation of coming into an office as business needs arise.
