Summary Of Duties And Responsibilities

The HIV Prevention Advocate’s focus is to conduct HIV, Hep C and Syphilis testing and counseling. Must have the ability to multi-task and prioritize multiple projects. The HIV Prevention Advocate will engage new and existing patients in HIV prevention services, identifying those at risk using validated screening tools, and facilitating access to PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) to prevent new infections. The HIV Prevention Advocate will demonstrate the ability to work with community collaborations and participate in outreach events, such as PRIDE.

Primary Duties And Responsibilities

  • Counsels patients on HIV prevention and provides education about PrEP and PEP.
  • Links patients with referral sources for PrEP or PEP medications if not available within Variety Care.
  • Links HIV positive patients to Variety Care or other facilities for HIV treatment.
  • Links Hep C positive patients to Variety Care or other facilities for Hep C treatment.
  • Maintains and grows community partnerships and collaborations.
  • Coordinates with non-Variety Care agencies to support HIV+ community and improve testing, treatment, and prevention strategies.
  • Participates in outreach events, such as PRIDE, evenings, and weekends as needed.
  • Coordinates with supervisor for advertising and community awareness at all locations; serves as liaison between outreach and health centers.
  • Maintains public presence for Variety Care by updating resources, contacts, and other outside personnel.
  • Attends community events and meetings - evenings and weekends, as needed.
  • Supports Variety Care’s accreditation as a Patient Centered Medical Home and adheres to the Triple Aim of healthcare reform.
  • Provides leadership and works with all staff to achieve department and community goals.
  • Responsible for addressing patient needs and utilizing effective communication skills, considering cultural sensitivity.
  • Ensures proper disposal of contaminated items or expired test kits according to Variety Care policy.
  • Follows HIPAA guidelines and Variety Care policies and procedures for privacy and confidentiality.
  • Supports the plan of care and patient education in line with provider’s recommendations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Essential Functions

  • Able to lift at least 25 pounds.
  • Able to assist patients onto and off of exam table when asked or directed.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma (or GED).
  • Expert interpersonal skills.
  • Experience leading projects and being a team player.
  • Demonstrated ability to obtain and record accurate information.
  • Intermediate computer skills including data entry and typing.
  • Knowledge of instrumentation used in lab point of care testing, as directed within 90 days.
  • Experience communicating with the patient population.
  • Experience working in a multi-faceted, fast-paced work environment.
  • Experience maintaining confidentiality of information in accordance with HIPAA and Variety Care policy.
  • Valid Oklahoma driver’s license and satisfactory driving record.

Preferred Skills Or Knowledge

  • Experience working with the HIV community.
  • Working experience in related fields.
  • Taken CTR training offered by OSDH.
