Histotechnologist
About the role
The Histotechnologist performs a variety of laboratory and administrative duties in preparing tissue specimens for examination by a pathologist. Duties include fixing, embedding, cutting skin tissue, applying immunohistochemical stains, and other special stains as directed by the pathologist. The incumbent prepares solutions, maintains laboratory equipment, and keeps detailed records of work processed. Quality control procedures and evaluation of results are performed to resolve minor technical and equipment issues.
Responsibilities
- Prepares tissue specimens for examination by a pathologist
- Fixes, embeds, cuts skin tissue, and applies a wide variety of immunohistochemical stains
- Maintains laboratory equipment and keeps detailed records of work processed
- Performs quality control procedures and evaluates results to resolve minor technical and equipment problems
- Aids other histotechnicians with technical questions and performing daily tasks
- Supports activities required for JCAHO accreditation by assisting in updating lab manuals and routine maintenance logs (as needed)
- Ensures that equipment is maintained and used properly
- Aids in monitoring the antibody, reagent, and control material logs to ensure accuracy and currentness
- Performs the full scope of technical duties in the laboratory as needed
- Assists in grossing technical duties as instructed and associated data entry including gross descriptions and accessioning
Requirements
- BS in Science or meets CLIA requirements for high complexity testing
- ASCP Certified HT/HTL, active/current
- Minimum 3-year experience in a high-volume histology laboratory
- Knowledge of staining techniques and familiarity with reagents
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills required
Qualifications
- Required: BS in Science or meets CLIA requirements for high complexity testing
- Required: ASCP Certified HT/HTL, active/current
- Required: Minimum 3-year experience in a high-volume histology laboratory
- Preferred: ASCP QIHC Certified, active/current
- Preferred: Experience with tissue grossing and processing
- Preferred: Ability to maintain a high level of productivity in grossing and accessioning
Skills

Pay
Final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF.
