About the role
The position serves under the administrative guidance of the Clinical Laboratory Leadership and the technical guidance of the pathologist(s) on-duty. The primary function involves specimen receiving, assisting with specimen grossing, tissue processing, microtomy, slide preparation, slide staining, special staining procedures, Immunohistochemical staining, slide quality checks, assisting with bone marrow biopsies and aspirations, limited grossing, reviewing and signing off on competencies, and writing/reviewing procedures.

- Performing histological procedures on body tissue, bone marrow, body fluids, and blood
- Supporting the histology section with common clerical duties as needed
- Scheduling of hours may be adjusted as necessary by the company
Responsibilities
Additional responsibilities include specimen accessioning, specimen storage/retrieval, and report storage/retrieval. The incumbent performs histological procedures on body tissue, bone marrow, body fluids, and blood as per laboratory policies and procedures. Support tasks may include specimen collection, sample handling, data entry, word processing, and other common clerical duties.
- Processing tissues, cutting tissue sections, preparing and staining slides, performing special staining procedures
- Assisting the physician/pathologist when performing clinical procedures on patients
- Performing limited grossing responsibilities
- Performing immunohistochemical staining
- Reviewing and signing off on competencies
- Writing and reviewing procedures in accordance with CAP guidelines
- Assisting the pathologist/pathology assistant with specimen grossing
- Performing special projects as assigned by the Leader
- Training clinical laboratory histology technicians
- Following autopsy protocols for receiving and logging specimens
- General clerical duties
Qualifications
The incumbent must maintain technical knowledge and skills necessary to perform daily work tasks. They must consider the age of the patient when assisting the pathologist/physician during clinical procedures. Knowledge of and adherence to safety requirements in the laboratory and hospital are essential. A comprehensive knowledge of all procedures is required, and competency in work-related skills must be demonstrated annually.
- Accesses the Laboratory Information System(s) and Hospital Information System to collect clinical and demographic information as required by policies and procedures
- Maintains corporate compliance by observing and enforcing related policies and procedures, emphasizing confidentiality
Skills
Requires a national certification as a HTL (Histotechnologist) (ASCP) OR HT (Histotechnician) (ASCP).
