About the role

A Tennessee Public High School History Teacher is responsible for educating 9th through 12th grade students on state mandated social studies content, fostering critical thinking, and preparing students for civic life. This role falls under the broader category of secondary social studies education within Tennessee public school districts.

Responsibilities

  • Instruct local, state, national, and global historical events while aligning lessons with the Tennessee Academic Standards for Social Studies.
  • Develop and implement data-driven, engaging daily lesson plans that utilize primary sources, multimedia aids, and historical analysis.
  • Design and administer diagnostic, formative, and summative assessments to measure mastery and prepare students for state-required assessments.
  • Modify instruction and provide targeted classroom interventions to support diverse learner populations, including English learners and students with individualized education plans (IEPs).
  • Maintain a structured, safe, positive, and inclusive classroom learning environment in accordance with school board policy.
  • Maintain consistent, proactive communication with parents, legal guardians, and administrators regarding student academic progress and behavioral development.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Education: Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in history, secondary education, or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Licensure: Must hold (or be eligible for) a valid Tennessee Educator License issued by the Tennessee Department of Education with an appropriate secondary endorsement.
  • Testing: Passing scores on the required Praxis subject assessments for social studies content and pedagogy.

Additional Duties

  • Attend mandatory in-person faculty meetings, professional development workshops, and professional learning communities (PLCs).
  • Monitor non-instructional student activities, which may include morning arrival, lunchroom duty, or after-school supervision.
  • Act as an advisor for student clubs or optionally serve as an athletic coach.
