Key Responsibilities
- Accession, label, and process GI and liver biopsy specimens according to laboratory SOPs.
- Perform gross examination assistance, embedding, microtomy, and slide preparation.
- Execute routine and special stains (H&E, PAS, Giemsa, Trichrome, Alcian Blue, Iron, etc.) with precision.
- Operate, calibrate, and maintain all histology instruments (microtomes, embedding centers, stainers).
- Maintain quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) records in compliance with CLIA, CAP, and OSHA standards.
- Prepare and monitor reagent inventories, equipment logs, and maintenance schedules.
- Ensure proper specimen identification and chain of custody for diagnostic accuracy.
- Collaborate closely with pathologists, gastroenterologists, and the lab director to optimize workflow and turnaround times.
- Participate in CLIA inspections, documentation reviews, and process improvements.
Qualifications
- Education: Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Histotechnology, Medical Laboratory Science, or a related biological field.
- Certification: ASCP certification (HT or HTL) preferred; eligibility or equivalent experience considered.
- Familiarity with CLIA and CAP requirements is strongly preferred.
- Experience: Minimum of 2 years in a histopathology or surgical pathology lab.
- Prior experience in GI or hepatology specimen processing highly desirable.
- Strong knowledge of tissue fixation, embedding, microtomy, and staining principles.
- Meticulous attention to detail and ability to maintain documentation accuracy.
- Self-motivated with strong communication and time management skills.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with digital pathology workflows or slide scanning systems.
- Proficiency in laboratory information systems (LIS) for accessioning and reporting.
- Familiarity with IHC and molecular ancillary testing processes.
- Knowledge of biosafety, reagent handling, and internal audits.
