Histology Technologist

Job Description

Performs a variety of technical tasks to prepare tissue samples for microscopic examination by a Pathologist, including grossing and frozen sections, pursuant to established and approved protocols. Responsibilities include maintaining equipment and records, performing quality‑assurance activities related to examination performance, and exercising independent judgment and responsibility.

Responsibilities

• Prepares (grosses) tissue specimens for processing by describing and measuring them while ensuring proper identification throughout processes.
• Fixes, dehydrates, clears, and embeds tissue specimens using appropriate techniques.
• Performs microtomy, cutting thin sections of tissue from embedded blocks and mounting them onto slides for staining preparation.
• Performs routine and special histological staining procedures, including Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) staining.
• Executes specialized staining techniques such as immunohistochemistry, enzyme histochemistry, immunofluorescence, and in situ hybridization.
• Operates automated staining equipment, solutions, and reagents, and troubleshoots any issues.
• Maintains accurate records of all procedures performed and preserves patient confidentiality.
• Assists in the training of new laboratory personnel.
• Uses independent judgment within defined parameters.
• Works under minimal supervision.
• Assists senior team members in selecting methods, techniques, and analytical approaches.
• Provides primary contact within the department or unit, supporting team members on day‑to‑day clinical cases.
• May mentor and train team members on technical skills and support department or unit management in daily clinical operations.
• Performs related duties as required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree required.
• Current license to practice as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist or Histotechnologist in New York State, plus specialized certifications as needed.
• 3.0–1 years of technical experience required.
