Histology Technician Per Diem

About the Role

As a Per Diem Histology Technician, you will process specimens, prepare slides, perform staining, maintain records, and ensure quality control in accordance with established department procedures.

Responsibilities

• Process all specimens and set up the tissue processor in a predetermined sequence.
• Replace chemicals and set instruments for defined timing sequences as per department procedures.
• Maintain familiarity with procedures for referred biopsy specimens.
• Embed processed tissue samples and prepare molds in accordance with department procedures.
• Cut, mount, stain, and label slides, matching them to corresponding requisition forms.
• Prepare wrinkle-free sections of 4-5 micron thickness and deparaffinize sections completely.
• Change staining solutions and perform a wide variety of special stains as needed.
• Check Q.C. slides and special stain slides for adequacy of staining properties.
• Maintain daily reports, recording the number of blocks, slides, and special stains per day.
• Accurately file slides and blocks in strict numerical order.
• Record temperatures of the tissue processor, water, and paraffin baths daily.
• Attend and participate in continuing education in-services, mandatory seminars, and training for Residents and new employees.
• Maintain an orderly and efficient work area while conforming to safety protocols and laboratory dress code.
• Participate in yearly formaldehyde/xylene badge checks.

Requirements

• One year of training in an approved Histology program.
• Eligible for ASCP Histology registry or equivalent training and experience.

Pay

Hourly rate: $32.50 USD. Compensation may include clinical certification pay and shift differentials for eligible positions.
