Job Summary and Responsibilities

As a Histotechnician, you will prepare human tissue for microscopic investigation and analysis by pathologists, including sectioning, treatment, slide placement, drying, and staining. Daily, you will accurately perform accessioning and clerical functions, assist pathologists with tissue cutting and autopsies, and prepare slides with routine and special stains. You will maintain records, ensure proper chemical handling and tissue disposal, operate lab information systems securely, and deliver accurate, timely lab reports, plus other assigned duties. Success in this role requires meticulous attention to detail in tissue preparation, strong lab safety and compliance knowledge, LIS proficiency, and a commitment to high-quality diagnostic support.

Essential Key Job Responsibilities

  • Receives, accessions as required, and prepares tissues and other biological materials using accepted histological techniques; performs proper labeling, fixation, embedding, microtomy, staining, and coverslipping.
  • Sections and stains histological specimens for routine and special studies.
  • Prepares various stains, solutions, and other compounds used in the staining process.
  • Follows written technical procedures.
  • Prioritizes work appropriately.
  • Follows laboratory turnaround time standards.
  • Uses time efficiently.
  • Affords assistance to pathologists within scope of practice.
  • Maintains supply inventory and assists in ordering and stocking, properly logs reagents and supplies into the lab when received.
  • Follows laboratory inventory procedures.
  • Demonstrates competency operating, troubleshooting and maintaining equipment.

Job Requirements

  • Required Education and Experience:
    • Opt 1: Successful completion of an accredited Histotechnician or Histotechnologist program
    • Opt 2: HS and 60 college/university semester hrs, with a combination of 12 hrs biology and chemistry (must include both) AND one year full time acceptable experience in a histopathology laboratory within the last 5 years including fixation, embedding, microtomy, processing and staining.
    • Opt 3: Associates degree with a combination of 12 hrs biology and chemistry (must include both) AND one year full time acceptable experience in a histopathology laboratory within the last 5 years including fixation, embedding, microtomy, processing and staining.
    • Opt 4: Will consider candidates with High School diploma and two or more years of experience in all areas of routine histology in lieu of academic credit/degree and/or certification.
  • Preferred Education And Certifications:
    • Associate degree and successful completion of an accredited Histotechnician program, AND/OR Histotechnician certification, HT, by American Society of Clinical Pathology

Pay Range

$28.10 - $41.80 /hour
