Histology Technician
About the role
Receives and prepares tissue specimens for routine and special examinations. Performs complex histological procedures using techniques to gross, embed, perform microtomy, and stain to make tissue slides used for diagnosis. Reviews slide quality. Maintains and repairs lab instruments. Disinfects work area and stocks supplies. Ensures all lab safety, quality control and quality assurance standards are met. Works with self-discipline and good judgment while following established standards of practice. Performs routine duties in all areas of the Histology Laboratory. May be required to interact with all ages of client population. Recognizes responsibilities of other laboratory and health care personnel and interacts with respect for their jobs and patient care. Keeps abreast of new procedures in the department as well as changes in general hospital policy and procedures.
Responsibilities
- Prepares tissue specimens for routine and special examinations.
- Performs complex histological procedures including grossing, embedding, microtomy, and staining.
- Reviews slide quality.
- Maintains and repairs lab instruments.
- Disinfects work area and stocks supplies.
- Maintains lab safety, quality control, and quality assurance standards.
- Works independently with self-discipline and good judgment.
- Performs routine duties in all areas of the Histology Laboratory.
- Interacts with respect for other laboratory and health care personnel.
- Keeps abreast of new procedures and changes in hospital policy and procedures.
Requirements
- Associate's degree in Laboratory or Biological Sciences.
- National certification as a Histology Technician from an approved HHS agency, such as ASCP, or registry eligibility upon hire with certification within twelve months.
Qualifications
- Associates degree in Laboratory or Biological Sciences required.
- National certification as a Histology Technician from an approved HHS agency, for example American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or must be registry eligible upon hire and receive Histology Technician (HT) certification within twelve months.

$21.50 - $34.50 per hour.
