Histology Department Supervisor
Yosemite Pathology is a private, independent pathologist-owned and operated surgical pathology and cytology laboratory based in Modesto, CA. We provide comprehensive, state-of-the-art, reliable, and accurate diagnostic services to physicians and major area hospitals across Alameda, Amador, Calaveras, Contra Costa, Kern, Mariposa, Merced, San Joaquin, Solano, Stanislaus, and Tuolumne counties. Our laboratory offers a full spectrum of tissue pathology, cytology, and histology services, including examination of gynecologic specimens, body fluids, and fine needle aspiration specimens, as well as an extensive array of special stains and immunohistochemistry to assist in the management of oncologic and non-oncologic diseases.
About the role
The Histology Department Supervisor oversees the Histology Department, ensuring efficient workflow, quality control, and compliance with company values and regulatory guidelines. This position is responsible for cutting, staining, and preparing tissue samples for pathologist review, prioritizing testing procedures, and maintaining accurate records. The role provides daily technical guidance, training, and support to Histology Department staff while implementing best practices for optimal workflow and quality.
Responsibilities
- Perform all daily technical bench functions of the Histology Department while providing guidance on workflow and prioritization of tasks
- Check "H&E", special stains, and IHC controls for stain quality
- Set up, clean, and maintain instruments
- Retrieve correct blocks and slides for any request from Pathologist
- Maintain special stains and IHC control banks
- Perform training, competency assessments, and annual performance evaluations for Histology staff
- Assist in inventory maintenance for the histology department
- Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues
- Communicate clearly with staff, Pathologists, and Assistant Director of Laboratory Services
- Ensure the Histology Department remains in compliance with all CLIA regulatory guidelines
Requirements
- 2 - 4 years of Histology experience
- ASCP HT Certification (or in process of obtaining)
- Associates Degree in Biology or related field (Preferred)
- Basic understanding of H&E stain and knowledge of special stains and IHCs
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
- Manual dexterity and strong attention to detail
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize, multitask, and pay attention to detail
- Ability to foster teamwork, problem-solve, and demonstrate critical thinking and conflict resolution skills
- Work under pressure in stressful situations
- Intermediate computer skills; Laboratory Information System experience a plus
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, including strong Excel and Word skills

Pay
The compensation is $80,000 - $95,000 annually, paid semi-monthly on an eight-hour per day, forty-hour per week schedule. Final salary offer is subject to multiple factors including candidate experience, expertise, geographic location, and current market data.
Schedule
Monday - Friday, 6:00am - 2:30pm
Work Environment
This position operates in a laboratory environment and involves frequent standing and exposure to hazardous chemicals and biohazardous materials.
