About the role
The Histotechnician prepares tissue specimens for microscopic examination by the pathologist. Key responsibilities include performing various histology procedures, supporting immunohistochemistry processes, maintaining quality control, and collaborating with healthcare professionals.
Responsibilities
- Prepare tissue specimens for microscopic examination, including fixation, processing, embedding, and microtomy
- Perform routine and special staining procedures according to established protocols
- Absorb and perform immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining and related procedures as applicable
- Ensure proper specimen identification, labeling, and tracking throughout all stages of processing
- Maintain quality and integrity of tissue samples to support accurate diagnosis
- Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot histology equipment such as microtomes, processors, and stainers
- Adhere to laboratory policies, procedures, and safety guidelines, including infection control practices
- Maintain documentation, logs, and records in compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards (CAP, CLIA, TJC)
- Perform quality control and participate in quality assurance and performance improvement activities
- Manage workflow to meet turnaround time expectations and prioritize urgent specimens
- Assist with inventory management, including ordering and stocking of supplies and reagents
- Ensure proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials in accordance with safety regulations
- Collaborate with pathologists, laboratory staff, and other healthcare professionals to support patient care
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment
- Participate in continuing education and competency assessments
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Laboratory Director or Manager
Requirements
- Associate’s degree in biological, chemical, or clinical laboratory science with at least two years histotechnology on the job training, or completion of a histotechnology program required
- HT/ASCP Certification, or equivalent, preferred
- Minimum of one year hospital laboratory work experience, preferred
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Good communication and teamwork skills
- Basic computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office applications
Skills
- Proficiency with histology equipment and techniques
- Knowledge of histopathology and immunohistochemistry principles
- Excellent problem-solving and critical thinking skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Strong organizational and time management skills

Pay
$29.00 to $39.03 per hour
Schedule
Full Time Nights: 12a-830a and rotating weekends
