Summary
Please note: This is a pool position. No guarantee of hours. Implements, performs, and troubleshoots various tasks required to receive, process, and prepare patient tissue specimens for microscopic examination and analysis by a pathologist.
Essential Functions
- Prepares microscopic tissue slides for the pathologists, including processing, embedding, cutting, and staining of paraffin and frozen tissue specimens.
- Collaborates with leadership to improve services to clients, meet or exceed regulatory requirements, and report deficiencies.
- Validates, implements, and performs special stains, and immunohistochemistry studies.
- Performs special procedures, i.e., lymph node, breast localization, bone marrow procedures, etc.
- Orients and trains histology laboratory assistants and technical staff, including safety procedures.
- Aids pathologists in X-raying blocks for calcification when requested.
- Maintains appropriate amounts and types of inventory for Histology.
- Prepares and troubleshoots histology reagents.
- Maintains departmental procedure manuals and slide files for histology.
- Disposes of chemicals and tissue appropriately as outlined for the laboratory.
- Functions as a technical resource for non-certified histotechnicians in the department as needed.
- Understands and complies with code and evacuation procedures.
- Adheres to departmental patient handling performance standards.
Qualifications
- Associate Degree in biology or related science and HT(ASCP) Certification or equivalent.
- 3-year experience in histology.
- Desired 5-years' experience in histology.
