Hiring Tapers / Mudders & Painters
About the role
PatchBoyz technicians are tapers and mudders responsible for visiting an average of 2 client homes per day using a company vehicle and gas. At these homes, they handle everything from a 1'x1' patch to multiple small holes left by electricians. It's the technician's responsibility to follow instructions in the PatchBoyz app and get the job patched and painted (often requiring 2 visits).
Compensation
- Ottawa technicians start at $30/hour + company vehicle
- Toronto area technicians start at $35/hour + company vehicle (cost of living adjustment)
Ideal candidate profile
PatchBoyz hires many formerly self-employed tapers, handymen, or contractors who are highly independent and autonomous. These are people who enjoyed being independent but grew tired of late nights quoting and selling jobs, preferring to spend more time with family and friends while still earning good money. Technicians follow directions in the app, complete their work, and go home — no quoting, no sales, no stress.
Tools and equipment
Vans come fully equipped with knives, vacuum, hot muds, air movers, drills, and more. Tools are the technician's responsibility: lost items must be replaced; worn items are replaced upon sending a photo. Brands used include Festool, Dewalt, Richard, Nela, and Level 5.
A Festool dust-extractor is a key tool, allowing virtually dustless repairs. When hand-sanding, technicians keep the air hose close to the sanding sponge to minimize cleanup time. Some technicians purchase additional attachments to speed up their work.
Qualifications
- Valid driver's license
- Good driving abstract
- 5+ years of experience in taping (plaster capabilities are a plus)
- Ability to communicate effectively with clients and management
- Able to keep work van and tools in good order
- Smartphone capable of running the dispatch app (jobs come with photos and checklists)
- Active email address
- Willingness to paint (patches, sometimes full walls/ceilings)
- Low ego — the role requires picking up a paintbrush, but the work is easier on the body and clients are very appreciative

Work environment and schedule
- Monday to Friday schedule; weekend work available upon request
- Technicians are assigned a territory within their city to reduce fuel costs and travel time
- Clients are respectful; PatchBoyz does not put technicians in environments where they would be mistreated
- PPE (P100 masks) is provided and strongly encouraged
Hiring process
- Email of interest: Send a note explaining why you'd like to join the team
- Info gathering: Provide CV/resume (if available), pictures of your work, and your Facebook name (to represent the brand)
- Video interview: FaceTime or Google Duo call to get to know you
- Training (GTA or Ottawa): 1–2 weeks of paid ride-along training with a mentor. You'll learn which compounds to use and how to use the app. Travel to Ottawa (if required) is at your own expense; hotel is paid for
- Drive home in your new PatchBoyz Van: After successful training, you'll receive your van, tools, clothing, and dispatch app, ready for your first order
Ongoing support
New technicians are assigned a mentor available for questions during working hours (as long as they're not actively working with mud). Video conferences with mentors and head office are frequent initially, then taper to a regular bi-weekly schedule.
