About the role
The Patient Safety Attendant (PSA) plays a crucial role in ensuring high-quality, efficient care for patients. They are responsible for observing patient behavior, communicating with and de-escalating patients, and notifying nursing personnel of any changes in the patient's condition or needs.
Responsibilities
- Be present for the designated patient, either visually or physically, to observe patient behavior and communicate with and de-escalate patient.
- Notify nursing personnel if the patient condition changes or requires assistance.
- Serve as a resource to assist PCT/MST and nursing staff with basic functions for the designated patient.
- Ensure the patient environment is free of obstacles and minimize risk of falls and accidental or intentional self-harm.
- Accompany patient and ensure patient safety during transportation, testing, and procedures occurring away from the patient’s normal environment.
- Establish a safe, risk-free patient environment by utilizing knowledge of fall prevention protocols, infection control measures, and self-harm prevention.
- Create clear, accurate documentation on patient status and activity during the shift.
- Perform other duties as needed when not providing direct patient observation.
- Assist nursing staff with tasks such as transporting patients, delivering equipment and supplies, transporting specimens, delivering patient trays, answering phones, and assisting visitors.
- Participate as an active member of the healthcare team and positively promote the rest of the team to patients, families, caregivers, and other colleagues.
- Participate in hospital or departmental performance improvement activities and seek opportunities to improve department and inter-department processes.
- Restock non-medicinal patient room supplies as needed.
Requirements
- Require BLS/CPR certification within ninety (90) days of start date.
- Mandatory Education: HS EQ - High School Diploma, GED, or Certificate.
- Monday- Sunday, alternating weekends and holidays required.
- Day Shift: 7 am- 7:30 pm
- Night Shift: 7 pm- 7:30 am
- Full-time is three shifts/week. Requires four days per week of availability.
Qualifications
- Prefer demonstrated interpersonal skills to provide calm verbal feedback to patients, re-direct behavior, and reinforce safety with patients.
- Prefer the ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Prefer the ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Prefer demonstrated knowledge/experience of growth and development, and possess the ability to interact, communicate, and care for specific patient population with care and compassion.
- Prefer previous experience in health care field.
Skills
- Knowledge of fall prevention protocols.
- Knowledge of infection control measures.
- Knowledge of self-harm prevention.
