HIM Specialist

Job Summary

As our HIM Specialist, you will manage patient health information and medical records, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and integrity for patient care. Every day you will retrieve, file, and organize patient records (physical/electronic), ensuring completeness and confidentiality. You will process information requests, verify identities, assist providers with access, and conduct quality checks on scanned documents. Responsibilities include updating demographics, handling correspondence, and responding to inquiries per privacy regulations.

Responsibilities

• Retrieve, file, and organize patient records (physical/electronic)
• Ensure completeness and confidentiality of patient records
• Process information requests, verify identities, assist providers with access
• Conduct quality checks on scanned documents
• Update demographics
• Handle correspondence
• Respond to inquiries per privacy regulations
• Perform birth registration functions, collect and process data for newborn registrations, stillbirths, and paternity assignments
• Answer phones and assist customers in support of HIM customer service efforts
• Utilize proper telephone etiquette to project a positive image
• Review encounters for completeness and identify incomplete or missing documentation and signatures
• Identify responsible practitioners/physicians and link deficiencies to appropriate physicians/practitioners
• Respond to formal requests for medical records from third parties, maintaining compliant actions and logging appropriately
• Review pended dictations for actions, completion, and use in the EMR
• Review and respond to medical record document messages from providers and staff for corrections

Requirements

• High School Graduate or GED
• One (1) year of experience working with medical records
• One (1) year of medical office experience
• Preferred one (1) year of experience working with medical records in an acute care HIM environment
• Certified in Electronic Medical Record (EMR) experience
• Completion of a HIM equivalent study course
• Cerner Experience
