About the role
Join the Iowa Department of Transportation as a Highway Technician to inspect construction projects in the summer and assist maintenance garages with snow removal operations in the winter. This position offers growth opportunities and the chance to support multiple areas while contributing to safer roadways through a variety of tasks, both in the field and in the office.
Responsibilities
- Conduct routine sampling, inspection, and testing of materials used in highway construction.
- Maintain construction records.
- Inform contractors and project inspectors of construction quality issues and/or non-complying work.
- Operate snow equipment to remove snow, ice, and frost from roadways.
- Perform routine maintenance and servicing of DOT equipment and vehicles.
- Repair and maintain guardrails, signs, fences, and lighting.
- Use technology and software to switch between multiple applications and complete high-volume typing tasks across different digital platforms and devices.
Requirements
- CDL permit upon hire; Class A CDL with required endorsements/restrictions within 5 months of hire date. Entry-level driver training is available.
- Successful U.S. DOT Clearinghouse query.
- Pre-employment physical verifying ability to perform the duties described. View demonstration video.
- Pre-employment drug screen and ongoing participation in random drug and alcohol testing programs.
- May be required to obtain pesticide/herbicide certifications or other certifications as needed.
- Comfortable using technology, switching between applications, and completing high-volume typing tasks.
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must meet at least one of the following:
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalency, plus two years of full-time work in highway maintenance, equipment operation, construction inspection, field work in engineering survey, or materials inspection and testing.
- A combination of two years of post-high-school education (30 semester hours equals one year of experience) and/or full-time experience in the fields listed above.
- Current, continuous state executive branch experience including eighteen months of full-time work as a Highway Technician Associate or Construction Technician Assistant.
Additional Qualification Requirements
- Must obtain and maintain a valid Commercial Driver’s License with required endorsements within a specified timeframe.
- Subject to federal drug and alcohol testing regulations, including pre-employment and random testing.
- Post-offer, pre-employment physical verifying ability to perform duties.
- May be required to obtain and maintain Herbicide Applicator certification.
- Certification for testing materials and operating specialized equipment as required by the Iowa DOT’s Technical Training and Certification Program.
- Travel, including overnight, may be required; employees must arrange their own transportation.
- Must reside within 45 minutes driving time of the assigned work location (DeWitt Maintenance Garage) within five months of hire.
- Must respond to emergency situations and be able to work up to 16 consecutive hours as required.
Schedule
7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday through Friday. Hours may vary, and the position is subject to 24-hour on-call duty during emergencies or weather conditions. Some overnight travel may be required.
