About the role
The Iowa Department of Transportation is seeking a Highway Technician to inspect construction projects in the summer and assist maintenance garages with snow removal operations in the winter. This position offers the opportunity to grow and support multiple areas while being part of a cohesive team working toward safer roadways. Responsibilities span construction zones, maintenance operations, office work, and outdoor tasks.
Responsibilities
- Conduct routine sampling, inspection, and testing of materials used in highway construction
- Maintain construction records
- Inform contractors and project inspectors of construction quality issues and/or non-complying work
- Operate snow equipment to remove snow, ice, and frost from roadways
- Perform routine maintenance and servicing of DOT equipment and vehicles
- Repair and maintain guardrails, signs, fences, and lighting
- Use technology and software, switch between multiple applications, and complete high-volume typing tasks across different digital platforms and devices
Requirements
- CDL permit upon hire; Class A CDL with endorsements/restrictions within 5 months of hire date (Entry-level driver training available)
- Successful U.S. DOT Clearinghouse query
- Pre-employment physical verifying ability to perform duties
- Pre-employment drug screen and ongoing random drug and alcohol testing
- May be required to obtain pesticide/herbicide certifications or other certifications as needed
- Residency within 45 minutes driving time of the Atlantic Maintenance Garage within five months of hire
Qualifications
Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements:
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalency, plus two years of full-time work in highway maintenance, equipment operation, construction inspection, field work in engineering survey, or materials inspection and testing
- A combination of two years of post-high-school education and/or full-time experience (30 semester hours equals one year of experience) in the fields listed above
- Current, continuous state executive branch experience including eighteen months of full-time work as a Highway Technician Associate or Construction Technician Assistant
Additional qualification requirements:
- Valid Commercial Learner’s Permit upon hire; must obtain and maintain a valid Commercial Driver’s License with required endorsements
- Compliance with federal drug and alcohol testing regulations
- Post-offer, pre-employment physical verifying ability to perform duties
- May be required to obtain and maintain Herbicide Applicator certification
- Certification for testing materials and operating specialized equipment as required by the Iowa DOT’s Technical Training and Certification Program
- Ability to work up to 16 consecutive hours and respond to emergencies
- Overnight travel may be required; must arrange transportation to and from work areas
Schedule
- 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday through Friday
- Hours may vary and position is subject to 24-hour on-call status during emergencies or weather conditions
