Highway Technician Associate - DeSoto

About the role

The Iowa Department of Transportation seeks a Highway Technician Associate who enjoys variety in their daily tasks and prioritizes safety. This role involves various outdoor maintenance activities such as patching roads, repairing guardrails, and managing traffic.

Responsibilities

• Patching and repairing road surfaces
• Maintaining and repairing guardrails, signs, fences, lighting, culverts, and waterways
• Participating in traffic control for maintenance activities
• Picking up and disposing of litter and debris
• Operating snow equipment to clear snow, ice, and frost from roadways
• Mowing, cutting brush, and controlling vegetation
• Spraying pesticides and herbicides as needed

Requirements

• Residency within 45 minutes driving time of DeSoto Maintenance Garage within 5 months of employment
• Shift: 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday through Friday
• May be required to work overnight and be on-call for emergencies/weather conditions
• A valid Commercial Learner's Permit upon hire
• Valid Commercial Driver's License with required endorsements and applicable restrictions within 5 months of hire
• Pre-employment physical verifying the physical ability to perform the duties described
• Drug screen and ongoing participation in random drug and alcohol testing programs
• May be required to obtain and maintain certain certifications

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent
• At least 4 years of education and/or full-time experience in highway maintenance or equipment operation

• Good communication skills

Schedule

The shift is 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday through Friday. Hours may vary and the position is subject to being on call 24 hours a day during emergencies and/or weather conditions. Some overnight travel may be required.
