Highway Technician Associate - DeSoto
About the role
The Iowa Department of Transportation seeks a Highway Technician Associate who enjoys variety in their daily tasks and prioritizes safety. This role involves various outdoor maintenance activities such as patching roads, repairing guardrails, and managing traffic.
Responsibilities
- Patching and repairing road surfaces
- Maintaining and repairing guardrails, signs, fences, lighting, culverts, and waterways
- Participating in traffic control for maintenance activities
- Picking up and disposing of litter and debris
- Operating snow equipment to clear snow, ice, and frost from roadways
- Mowing, cutting brush, and controlling vegetation
- Spraying pesticides and herbicides as needed
Requirements
- Residency within 45 minutes driving time of DeSoto Maintenance Garage within 5 months of employment
- Shift: 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday through Friday
- May be required to work overnight and be on-call for emergencies/weather conditions
- A valid Commercial Learner's Permit upon hire
- Valid Commercial Driver's License with required endorsements and applicable restrictions within 5 months of hire
- Pre-employment physical verifying the physical ability to perform the duties described
- Drug screen and ongoing participation in random drug and alcohol testing programs
- May be required to obtain and maintain certain certifications
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- At least 4 years of education and/or full-time experience in highway maintenance or equipment operation

- Physical stamina and endurance
- Ability to operate heavy machinery and equipment
- Attention to detail
- Good communication skills

Schedule
The shift is 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday through Friday. Hours may vary and the position is subject to being on call 24 hours a day during emergencies and/or weather conditions. Some overnight travel may be required.
