About the role

As a Highway Technician Associate with the Iowa Department of Transportation, you will contribute to the mission of Making Lives Better Through Transportation while upholding core values: Safety First, People Matter, Customer Focused, Servant Leadership, and Integrity Without Exception. Responsibilities

  • Patching roadways
  • Repairing and maintaining guardrails, signs, fences, lighting, culverts, and waterways
  • Participating in traffic control for maintenance activities
  • Picking up and disposing of litter and debris
  • Operating snow equipment to remove snow, ice, and frost from roadways
  • Mowing, cutting brush, weed and vegetation control, and spraying
  • Performing routine maintenance and servicing of DOT equipment and vehicles

Schedule

Shift: 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday through Friday. Hours may vary, and the position is subject to on-call duty 24 hours a day during emergencies or severe weather conditions. Some overnight travel may be required.

Requirements

  • CDL permit upon hire; must obtain Class A CDL with required endorsements/restrictions within 5 months of hire (entry-level driver training provided)
  • Successful U.S. DOT Clearinghouse query
  • Pre-employment physical verifying ability to perform duties (see demonstration video)
  • Pre-employment drug screen and ongoing random drug/alcohol testing
  • May be required to obtain pesticide/herbicide or other certifications as needed

Qualifications

Applicants must meet at least one of the following:

  • Graduation from high school, GED, or equivalency
  • A total of four years of education and/or full-time experience (one year of high school education equals one year of full-time work in highway maintenance or equipment operation)

Residency

Within five months of hire, employees must reside within 45 minutes driving time (under normal conditions) from the Davenport Maintenance Garage.
