Responsibilities

  • Plans, supervises, directs, evaluates, and manages the activities of a crew or crews of skilled and semi-skilled Highway Maintenance Workers involved in various maintenance activities, as well as all mechanical resources such as Backhoe, Excavator, Front End Loader, Road Patcher, and Truck Mounted equipment.
  • Supervises staff, including preparing performance planning and evaluation documents and related personnel paperwork.
  • Coaches, counsels, and trains employees.
  • Establishes and monitors work processes.
  • Implements management policies and initiates and promotes teamwork within the organization.
  • Accurately documents all activities daily in the Highway Maintenance Management System (HMMS) following all current and applicable "Business Rules".
  • Investigates and assesses work requests within 14 days, documents the assessment in HMMS, and develops and implements a plan to correct based on safety and need.
  • Proactively communicates with superiors, peers, and subordinates via all communication media to relay pertinent information related to all activities.
  • Manages, plans, communicates, trains, and maintains the safe operation of human and mechanical resources related to work zones, equipment, employees, facilities, and associated responsibilities.
  • Reviews and ensures all work is performed safely, correctly, completely, efficiently, and documented according to all applicable State Standards, Policies, and Procedures.
  • Trains, monitors, and directs employees in CDL Compliance, Fleet Safety, PM Programs, and Vehicle/Equipment Maintenance.
  • Performs or assists in additional requests or tasks assigned by direct supervisor(s) within the State Chain of Command, including but not limited to Hurricane/Snow and Ice Plans, Customer Service, On-call, Traffic Control, Spill Response, and Emergency Work or support.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Three and one-half (3.5) years of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence.
  • Valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
  • Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

Physical Requirements

  • The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping, and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards.
  • May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies.
  • Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
