Responsibilities
- Performs a wide variety of maintenance activities in the construction, repair, and preservation of roads and bridges on the state highway system.
- Operates motorized equipment used in highway and bridge maintenance, including belt loaders, rollers, skid steers, tractors, trailers, and specialized patching and mowing equipment.
- Performs skilled manual labor such as patching roadway base and surface failures, cleaning ditches, placing pipe, installing driveways, removing fallen trees, and managing vegetation.
- Installs, repairs, and maintains signs and sign foundations, and sets, forms, and finishes concrete for curbs, gutters, and sidewalks.
- Operates single and tandem axle dump trucks, including with trailers, for hauling materials and transporting equipment.
- Assists in operating heavier equipment such as front-end loaders, motor graders, backhoes, and specialized slope mowers.
- Operates and maintains powered tools for tree and vegetation removal, pipe cleaning, concrete repair, and facility maintenance.
- Conducts safety inspections and daily preventative maintenance on assigned equipment to ensure proper operation and longevity.
- Operates salt brine anti-icing equipment and snow removal equipment during inclement weather.
- Assists in emergency operations and may be required to work extended hours or on-call rotations.
Requirements
- Six (6) months of related work experience or an approved acceptable equivalence.
- A valid motor vehicle operator’s license.
- Must obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
Physical Demands
- Bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping, and physically manipulating objects.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working near traffic and environmental hazards.
- Frequent exposure to outdoor environments in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease.
- May be required to work outside normal schedules, especially during inclement weather or emergencies.
