Highway Maintenance Worker II - Medium Equipment Operator (61035551)

Responsibilities

• Operates a front-end loader to perform maintenance tasks such as clearing right of way, repairing shoulders, and loading materials (asphalt, limestone, dirt, soil, cement, pipe, construction materials, and debris).
• Operates a tandem dump truck and flatbed truck for hauling materials (asphalt, limestone, dirt, soil, cement, pipe, construction materials, and debris).
• Operates a belt loader to load dirt, soil, and debris during shoulder repair operations.
• Performs manual labor duties including clearing right-of-ways, cleaning drainage ditches, repairing shoulders, patching potholes, making base repairs, bridge repairs, paving driveways, and laying sideline/cross line pipe.
• Performs vegetation management activities using powered hand tools (chainsaws, weed eaters, and pole saws).
• Coordinates placement of traffic control devices to set up maintenance work zones.
• Serves as a flagger to safely direct and control traffic in maintenance work zones.
• Conducts and documents pre-trip equipment/vehicle inspections in accordance with departmental rules, policies, and procedures for fleet safety.
• Assists in emergency and inclement weather operations, which may include extended working hours or 12-hour shifts.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Six (6) months of related work experience or an approved acceptable equivalence.
• Valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
• Must obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

Physical Demands

• Bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping, and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material.
• Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
• Requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards.
• May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies.
• Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
